Summary on Goordreads:

**AUTHOR NOTE - This is NOT a BDSM Romance**

We're thirteen girls, captive, slave to our master.
A master we've never seen.
Obedience will become all we know in our shallow existence. It is the only emotion we're permitted to feel.
When we're bad, we're punished. When we're good, we're rewarded.
Our scars run deep. Yet we survive, because we have to...
because HE teaches us to.
All of us are special, we feel it with everything we are.
He has us for a reason, but it's a reason we don't know.
We've never seen his face, but we know that something deeply broken lies beneath the darkness. With every touch, with every punishment, we know it.
Then something changed.
He showed me who he truly is.
Now I want him.
I'll go against everything I know to be with him.

A monster.

My monster.

Loving him is a sin, but a sinner I am. I won't stop until I see every part of him. Even the parts he keeps locked deep down inside.

I am Number Thirteen, and this is my story.

RATING:

***REVIEW***

"...Sometimes memories are best left forgotten..."

It seems that everybody is talking about this book these days, so of course we on Way Too Hot Books had to get it, especially after the synopsis & cover like this. I didn't read anything by this author before, so I was really excited when I got the chance to read it.

"No one deserves to die. But I did die, that day.
And in my place a monster was born."

The story started out dark, emotional, steamy, a mystery and ended up...sappy & confusing.

The few first pages into the book and I was hooked. It begins with the arrival of thirteen girls in the house of Master William, the guy whose men supposedly abducted them for him. The plot got more complex and mysterious with every next page. I was almost finished with the first half of the book and I still didn't know who are these girls or this mystery guy who blindfolds them every time when he's around them or the most important question of them all: why the hell did he abduct them? Those are the questions that bugged me and kept me reading without a break, because I love a good mystery and can't stop reading until I get all my questions answered. Of course, by the time we do find out, I had billion possible theories about what's going on.

One of them, at the beginning of the story, was that this will in deed be a bdsm romance, because it had a lot of its elements:
- controlling weirdo a.k.a Master William
- thirteen girls kept in basement
- punishment & rewards
- come & sit on my lap, I'll stroke your hair o.O
- a lot of slaps & humiliation

But then again, the author's note in the synopsis clearly says that this is not a bdsm romance and soon enough that theory was thrown in the water. Then, by the way the story was developing it seemed that the plot was turning into some kind of twisted version of The Bachelor (I won't reveal why, but if you watched that show, you'll get some idea why) and that's when I was starting to loose my interest, but I still hoped that there's some bigger meaning behind the plot. Unfortunately, in the end, this theory turned out to be true.

By the end there were so many loopholes in the story that I have to agree with the others who said in their reviews that they didn't see any point behind it. It had potential, it started out great until around 40% of the story everything went south. An the ending??? o.O

Read it and decide for yourself.

"Who is going to save a damaged girl? A disgusting girl with no name.
I don't want to feel anymore. I don't want sunshine. I don't want rain.
I just want darkness that takes away everything that's eating me inside."

XOXO

  1. Wow, that doesn't sound remotely like anything I would want to read. Sorry Number Thirteen didn't live up to expectation.

    1. The first half of the book was really engrossing and promising, but later on when you find out the reasons for everything that happened, I ended up disappointed & confused.

Thanks Andrea, hopefully my next read won't disappoint :)

  2. Huh. I was interested after reading the blurb, but hmm ... I don't know. I haven't seen any talk about this; your review is the first I've heard of it. It don't sound promising.

  3. You should read it then and decide for yourself. It wasn't that bad, but after the blurb I expected so much more.

  4. Number Thirteen: WOW! A powerful story! I fell in love with William early on and I believed from the beginning he had a good heart. His relationship with Number Thirteen made me feel joy, sorrow and a whole lot of in between emotions. I cried a lot at times. A lot of reviewers complained about the book, but it is clear from their reviews that they hadn't ever experienced the kind of horrors that these people suffered in the book. No, I was never a sex slave or a prostitute, but I survived some horrific abuse as a child and teen. I understand exactly what these characters felt, especially William and Number Thirteen. My only problem with the book was the use of Romanian by William, which is never explained. If he spoke in French, which is known as a language of love, I could understand, but it wasn't. I couldn't understand the tie of Romanian to the story. I didn't think it was a book about Stockholm's Syndrome as some reviewers claimed it was as much as it was a book about healing after traumas at the hands of really bad people.

    1. I agree with you Jalanne that the author did a good job on describing the emotions of the kidnapped and abused victims. In fact I loved the story until about 40%, while I didn't like the 2nd half and the incredulous ending and the way the author developed the story. We all have our reading preferences. I'm glad this book was great for you!:)
