“You would have saved me,” Laikyn said against his lips.
Her faith in him made him feel ten feet tall. “I’ll always protect you. You come first, middle, and last in my world. My every waking breath will be filled with your scent. I need you, Laikyn.”
“We should help Rowan unload the trailer into the barn for the night.” Laikyn nuzzled against his neck.
She fit him. He called her his kitten, and the way she was rubbing up against him, the soft little sighs, he truly thought the name appropriate, even though they were wolves.
“Alright, let’s get it done, so I can make you mine properly.” Kellen opened his door, climbing out with Laikyn in his arms.
“It’s a good thing you’re such a big man, Kellen.” Laikyn wrapped her arms around his neck.
He looked down at her. “Why’s that,” he asked letting her slide down the front of his body.
“You’re always picking me up, and I’m far from a small chick.” She stood on her toes and kissed his beard stubbled chin.
Kellen gripped her ass, bringing her flush with his hard-on. “Thank god for that. I love how you fit against me.”
Banging on the door had him growling. “Damn that Rowan.”
She laughed. “He is probably wanting to get home and practice making babies.”
“Boy needs to figure that shit out,” Kellen mumbled striding to the door.
At the door Rowan and Lyric stood with worried expressions. Rowan held his hand up, ready to knock again. “I know how to make babies. I just enjoy the practice. Tell her we are ready to do the making and its game on. Now, what the fuck happened?”
They spent the next few minutes getting the trailer in the barn, then Kellen ushered the couple into the large log home. After he shared the information Damien had given them, Rowan began to pace.
“How do we protect the entire pack if he decides to pull the same shit on them that he did on you two?”
“Forewarned is forearmed, man. Besides, I can share with everyone at once.” Kellen kept his tone level.
Lyric stood in front of Rowan. “He’s the alpha, remember.”
“So do you send out a call or text?” Humor laced Rowan’s voice, but Kellen saw through to the real worry.
Kellen nodded. “Something like that. I believe a mind-fuck some might call it, but I will do a little love tap first. I hate to bombard everyone at once, however it must be done now. I’m going to give Xan a heads up first.” Kellen gave Laikyn a kiss. “You will have to ignore his snarly attitude.”
“What do you mean?” Laikyn blinked up at him.
“I don’t plan to keep you out, so when I tap on Xan’s mind, he’ll more than likely be snarling back at me. Ignore him.”
Within minutes Kellen and Xan were mind-speaking, luckily he and Breezy weren’t in the process of doing the deed, making the snarling minimal. As Kellen’s second, Xan would help Kellen funnel the information throughout the pack.
“I say we use Rowan and his link with Lyric as well. He’s a strong alpha, not to mention a force to be reckoned with,” Xan suggested.

THE CALL
Present Day

DEREK PEARSON PUSHED open the door of Leighton, Finley & Associates, and stepped out on the paved sidewalk. It was the first day of August, and if the sweltering Floridian sun was any indication, today was going to be hotter than hell’s waiting room. As he strolled toward the curb, he pulled a pack of Marlboros from the pocket of his shorts and flipped open the top. He needed a fucking cigarette after watching Daniel Finley and his damn professor get all sappy and shit. That was gonna get old real quick if he had to stomach their nauseating displays of I love yous longer than the fifteen minutes he’d been in there. But he’d known he had to make an appearance sooner or later; otherwise Danny boy would’ve shown up asking questions.

Questions he wasn’t ready to answer. There’d been a reason he hadn’t come around to see Finn when he first moved back from Chicago two months ago, but it wasn’t something he was in the mood to talk about yet, even if he was one of the two people on the planet who would get all the shit he’d been dealing with. Yeah… He just wasn’t ready to go there. With a smoke between his lips, he lit up, then shoved the pack back in his shorts. He was so damn antsy lately, and for that he could thank his brother, Alan.

He walked around to the side of his Jeep and pulled open the door. After climbing inside, he grabbed his cell phone and stared at the dark screen, contemplating his next move. Am I really planning to do this? Fuck, it seemed that he was, even when he knew better. If he did this, it would be nothing more than a Band-Aid over the real problem. A shot to numb the more painful issues he was dealing with right now.

He would be slipping back into a pattern he had pulled himself out of. An addiction he’d broken free from. But he was also aware that if he didn’t do it, the alternative would be to spiral out of control, and solitude was no longer helping his fucked-up nerves. He brought the phone to his ear and waited. The phone rang and rang, and fucking rang, until he was close to hanging up—and then it connected.

“You free?” were the only two words out of his mouth. He waited, not caring to pursue small talk. That wasn’t what this was about. All he cared about in that moment was getting what he needed. When an affirmative came through the phone, he hung up, tossed it on the dashboard, and brought the Jeep to life. As he sped across town, he white-knuckled the steering wheel and didn’t allow himself to think about the consequences of what he was about to do. It took him less than ten minutes to pull into the underground parking garage of The Palisades and take the elevator up to where his drug of choice waited for him.

He glanced up into the camera in the corner of his metallic confines and stared boldly into the face of the one who was waiting at the other end of this ride. Yeah, he was about to fall off the fucking wagon big time. Was about to slide back into the one place he promised himself he wouldn’t go again. Yet as the elevator came to a halt and the doors opened, there was no denying this was exactly what he wanted.

“I have thirty minutes,” were the words that greeted him. Derek walked off the elevator and over to the naked man waiting for him. He took the haughty chin between his thumb and forefinger and promised in a voice thick with arousal, “I only need ten. Take me to your room, Jordan. Time’s a wasting.”

It's time to come home, Finn.

It’s been seven years since Daniel Finley left his hometown in Florida for the hustle and bustle of Chicago’s city life. Since then, he’s worked hard for his position at the prestigious law firm Leighton & Associates, even when it’s caused distance and isolation from his family and friends. But that’s all about to change. On his thirtieth birthday, he receives the one thing he never dared hope for. Something that was promised to him years earlier—a note. One simple sentence from the man he’s never been able to forget.

Six words will forever change the course of their lives.

Brantley Hayes has it all. Or so he thinks. When he first made the decision to take a job down in Florida, his family thought he was crazy. But, after years of living in the quiet beach town, he finally feels a sense of community. He’s surrounded himself with friends who are like family, has a job he loves, and owns a spectacular beachfront property that is his sanctuary. Yet he still feels unfulfilled, as if a piece of the puzzle is missing, and he knows exactly which piece it is. On an impulse, he follows through with a promise he made years earlier. A promise to call home the one he sent away.

Nothing is as simple as it seems. After years of separation, the former lovers are reunited, but Brantley wasn’t expecting to encounter the high walls now guarding Daniel’s heart. Daniel may not be the same person he was when he left, but he knows that the first step to healing is the note in his hand.

Review: ONE WITH YOU (Crossfire, #5) by Sylvia Day

One with You by Sylvia Day

Gideon Cross. Falling in love with him was the easiest thing I've ever done. It happened instantly. Completely. Irrevocably.

Marrying him was a dream come true. Staying married to him is the fight of my life. Love transforms. Ours is both a refuge from the storm and the most violent of tempests. Two damaged souls entwined as one.

We have bared our deepest, ugliest secrets to one another. Gideon is the mirror that reflects all my flaws ... and all the beauty I couldn't see. He has given me everything. Now, I must prove I can be the rock, the shelter for him that he is for me. Together, we could stand against those who work so viciously to come between us.

But our greatest battle may lie within the very vows that give us strength. Committing to love was only the beginning. Fighting for it will either set us free ... or break us apart.

Heartbreakingly and seductively poignant, One with You is the breathlessly awaited finale to the Crossfire® saga, the searing love story that has captivated millions of readers worldwide.

 Review

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Crossfire and I, we've had our ups and downs. There were times when it went on my nerves so much I wondered why I kept reading it. I could go all day listing all the things about this series I wish were done differently, but in the end, despite everything, I'd still say I liked it and I would mean it. I'm a Gideon Cross fan, and there's no denying that. I'm such a fan of his that I pre-ordered a paperback copy of One with You months ago -- it was a birthday present from me for me.

I tried not to have great expectations for One with You, but Captivated by You made me hopeful for the final part. That it would be the longest one yet was happy news. What I read was all right, but not as satisfying as I had hoped it would be. I guess when you have a five-book series about one couple following their relationship in the span of only a few months, it was as good as it gets. A few months... I still can't believe to them it's still the same summer, and I've been reading about them for three and a half years. Crazy...

Gideon and Eva were in a much better place in One with You. Finally! They were less crazy, and more like a stable married couple. The slightly insane women in their lives still threw curveballs at them, but they withstood it all like champions. That was progress.

Progress was also made on the Gideon's family front. Gideon making peace with most of his family, it was really nice.

There were many times in the past I thought if you took out all the sex scenes from these books, you wouldn't have much left. Well, One with You is different in that regard, and this time around I wish there was more sex in it. On the one hand, great for Gideon and Eva for proving they can keep their hand off each other for a little while, but on the other... what a shame... I've read many stories by Sylvia Day, and the last thing I'd expect to say about her book is that it should have had more sex scenes in it, but here we are.

I'd say one of the reasons I missed Gideon's skills in the bedroom department is that I didn't find the rest all that interesting. Some of it, like the whole Monica deal, had me wondering why that was even necessary. I've had a less than favorable opinion of her from day one, but still, was this really necessary? I don't think it was.

In the 462 pages of One with You Gideon and Eva matured as a couple, story lines were wrapped up, though I wouldn't say there weren't loose ends left, and the epilogue was more of a regular chapter. My favorite part in this installment was Gideon with his new little roommate -- they were enough to make this book worth reading. And let's face it, the only reason I kept on reading this series, the reason I liked it, and the reason I have all five books on my bookshelf is Gideon Cross.

Gideon Cross made it all worthwhile.

ARC Review: THE WATER THIEF by Jane Kindred

  Summary:

It takes a con to expose a con. But this con could strip their secrets bare.

Framed for his twin sister’s murder, Sebastian Swift has been kept drugged in a mental institution since age thirteen, aware of only one horrible fact—every night in his dreams, he drowns.

After a freak storm frees him, Sebastian learns the truth. His guardian, Emrys, has been siphoning off his inherited magical power over the waters of Cantre’r Gwaelod—one gruesome vial at a time. And the man’s bastard son, Macsen, has been raised in his place. Determined to find his twin’s killer, Sebastian assumes her identity.

Macsen Finch isn’t about to give up his guise as the young earl—and not just because of the fortune. His cousin’s return from the dead threatens Macsen’s own efforts to undermine his father’s evil plan. Yet he can’t deny his inexplicable attraction to the imposter.

Acting on their mutual desire puts them both at the mercy of a madman’s wrath. To stop Emrys from stealing his power, Sebastian will have to learn how to use it—and whom he can trust.

Warning: May contain copious exchange of fluids, men in corsets, and dirty dancing. Apply liberally before bedtime.

Review:

Rating: 2 stars.

This was my second time reading Jane Kindred. Truth be told, had this book not already been on my NetGalley shelf when I finished The Lost Coast, I would've stopped at one.

The Water Thief was better for me than The Lost Coast, but I think this author's works and I aren't a right match. Kindred obviously has many ideas, which I appreciate, but the execution of those ideas unfortunately doesn't work for me. Even so, there was something about this story that I can't quite put my finger on that kept me reading to see what happened next.

Just like with The Lost Coast I had trouble determining the genre of this book; it's got paranormal elements, for sure, it's also historical, and contemporary, I think, then it's erotica and romance, too. I think. What all of that combined makes I can't say. Hey, it's M/M -- this I can say with certainty.

The story starts with the main character Sebastian escaping the asylum he was being kept in for years under his evil guardian's orders. He did so with the guidance of the ghost of his late twin sister, and was led to a group of thieves who took him in. A little while later, together they devised a plan to have Sebastian disguise himself as his sister August and claim her place in the family and the realm. That put him once again in danger from his guardian who had been stealing Sebastian's power over water any chance he got. It also put him in the way of Macsen, who for years had assumed Sebastian's identity.

From there on Sebastian slowly found out the truth about his powers, his history, the truth about what really happened to August, and about that entire realm. Also, Sebastian and Macsen grew more and more attracted to each other.

A lot happened in this novel. The author had many ideas that could've made this a very interesting read, but the execution missed the mark for me. For a paranormal story, this book didn't offer much information about the world it was set in. The explanations about the realms weren't enough for me to get the full picture, and most of all I was confused as to what time the story was set in. The questions Where is this? and When is this? kept popping up in my mind.

That lack of world building was one thing that bothered me here. The other would be Sebastian. The novel has both Sebastian's and Macsen's perspectives, and while Macsen's is written in third person, Sebastian's is written in first, and it takes up a bigger chunk of the book, and yet, his character didn't leave much of an impression. It hasn't been long since I finished reading The Water Thief, but words that aren't "naive" don't come to mind to describe its main character. I have a higher opinion of Macsen, given his past and present. I guess the book's named after him for a reason.

So, with a confusing plot and setting, and only one character I somewhat cared about, I wouldn't label this a great read, but it kept my interest enough not to give up, so I can say it was okay, but that's it.

 EXCERPT

Trailing my hand down his face to his stomach, I hear his sharp intake of breath when I touch below his belly button. Not low enough to hit pay dirt, but enough that he knows where this is leading. My heart rate picks up in anticipation and my hand starts to shake with nerves. I haven’t done this since the first and last time that Louie and I had sex—my first and only time—but I need this. I want this.

“What are you doing?” he says, voice raspy from sleep.

“Tell me to stop if you don’t want this, but I need you, Louie. I need to feel you inside me. I need you to make me feel alive again, like I know only you can do,” I say before finally moving my hand down further, touching his hard cock straining against his jeans.

“Fuck, I need to you too, Low, but are you sure? We can wait. After last night—” he starts to say, but I cut him off by grabbing him firmly in my hand.

“I’m done talking, so if you don’t want this, you better stop me now.” I don’t waste any time grabbing the button on his jeans and lowering his zipper, but he catches my hand before I can get any further.

Nerves jump out at me again and I worry that he’s actually going to tell me no, to stop, but my fears are quickly dashed aside when he pushes me onto my back and takes my lips in a rough kiss.

“Fuck, I’ve missed you,” he says between kisses.

Not giving me any time to reply, he leans back in to drink from my lips. And I mean that almost literally. It’s like he’s trying to devour me, starting with my mouth, but you won’t hear me complaining. I’ve missed him so much these last couple years; I can’t believe I even made it an hour without him to at least talk to, let alone have him kissing me, touching me, loving me. The night we shared before I left town was one of the happiest days of my life, but being in his arms now and with his lips on mine, I know that it will soon be overshadowed by better days and memories.

With my head back in the game, and my body screaming at me to move faster to get him naked and inside of me, I reach down to unbutton his jeans, but am pleasantly surprised when I notice they are already unbuttoned. That’s good, because I really didn’t want to waste time fumbling with his button in my haste to get them off of him.

Going for his zipper, I start to lower it when Louie lifts his head slightly and stops my movements with his concerned gaze.

“Are you sure about this, Low? I mean, I can wait—fuck, it might kill me—but we don’t have to do this today. You’ve been through hell, I’m sure I don’t even know the half of it, but last night had to have taken a lot out of you too. So if this isn’t something you want right now, I’m okay with it.”

My heart almost breaks with the compassion and love I hear in his voice. I know he means well, and a part of me loves him even more for thinking of my feelings and what I’ve been through at a time like this, but the rest of me just wants him to fuck me already.

“Louie, I don’t know how to put this lightly, so I’m just going to come out and say it. I want this. I want you. So will you shut up already and just fuck me?”
