Shocked. Confused. Appalled. Conflicted. Devastated. But above all completely heartbroken. That is almost close enough summary of my feelings while reading the sixth book of Gypsy Brothers series. I didn't like the previous installment, because I felt that the author made it too unrealistic considering everything that had happened, and that is why I was hesitant about reading this book, but now, after I finished it, even though I didn't love it like some of the previous books I still think that the author is on the right track again. There were some things I liked and then there were some things I didn't, as usual.

"Will he even want me now? Or will I remain the empty, tarnished vessel- unlovable, dead on the inside, forever alone?"

Julie is in a really bad and dark place after the shocking ending of the previous book. She is far from the role of the ruthless and merciless avenger she imposed on herself. The inevitable thing happened and she finds herself at the very bottom for the 2nd time. Ruined. Tarnished.  Hopeless. One step from a total breakdown caused by so much pain, despair and loss. That's why it wasn't easy to read this book, especially because the author describes every detail so vividly. 

Considering her state it wasn't easy for me to like her, because she did some pretty careless things that made me want to shake some sense into her, but then again I also couldn't not feel sorry for her, because no person could stay sane after all that tragedy. I also didn't appreciate how she was more worried about Jace's opinion about her than other much important things. Jace is again on my shit list. My opinion about him has been conflicted since the beginning of the series, but the more the story is developing the less fondly I think  about him, especially after this book. I really didn't appreciate his behavior towards Julie in some situations. I wanted him to be more considerate taking in consideration all the fucked-up things she went through and I felt that he didn't do enough to help her heal.

Dark, twisted, devastating & heart-breaking. 

This series is definitely not for everyone. Only fans of dark reads will be able to enjoy it and handle the dark themes (gang-rape, murder, abortion, drug abuse etc.) and characters with questionable redeemable quality it is dealing with. I barely handled it and I've read some pretty twisted books so far. Also recommendable to the fans of the TV show Revenge, but have in mind that this is darker and gorier.

Today is the release day of the 7th book- One Love (Gypsy brothers, #7) which is also the last installment of the series. Considering the devious mind of the author, as always, I am both excited to read it and at the same time petrified of the out-come, because I believe it will be a hit/miss for me like the two previous books. Bring on the mindfuck, I'm not ready!

Review: NOWHERE RANCH by Heidi Cullinan

My review:

Picking up a book by an author whose work I've never read before is always exciting. So many possibilities lie ahead. I try not to expect much, but always end up expecting anything and everything.
This was my first book by Heidi Cullinan, and if this is how she usually writes, I want to read more.

 

To be honest, the only reason I even chose this book was because I needed a kinky book with a title that starts with the letter N. I was very happy when I found it -- it fit the criteria, and as an added bonus it was M/M. The D/s and M/M combination is my weakness, so I was hopeful I would enjoy reading Nowhere Ranch. But with my reason for reading it, and the author being new to me, I really had no idea what I was getting myself into. Luckily for me, the story of how Monroe Davis found home is one I will remember fondly.

 

Nowhere Ranch surprised me three times. First was the kink. When almost all the books with kink take place in big cities' fancy BDSM clubs with all the possible instruments available, you start wondering what kind of play could be possible on a ranch, especially one called Nowhere Ranch. Well, as it turned out, you can do a lot. Travis and Roe really played hard, even in my opinion. But they enjoyed it, so I liked it.

The first part of the book was about Roe and Travis getting to know each other a little, though mostly physically, and it's the part with most kink. Just when I got used to that pace, the second surprise came. It was the part that made me very sad. 

Roe left his hometown when his family wouldn't accept him being gay, and ever since he had been going from place to place, always moving, never making home anywhere, or making friends with anyone. And after a long time, he heard from his family. It was not for a good reason, and it was very unpleasant. I couldn't not feel bad for Roe. Your immediate family are the ones who should accept you the way you are no matter what. Even when the whole world turns their back on you, they are the ones who should stand by you. Sadly, that sounds like utopia. And Roe suffered because of their rejection. 

Fortunately, after all that darkness came the light. And that was the third thing that surprised me: the warm-and-fuzzy-feelings part. I never would have guessed the book would lead me there, but I loved this part. This is when Roe and Travis built a home for themselves, became a family in an unexpected way. It was the happy part, which both Roe and Travis more than deserved it.

Oh, yes, the story of how Monroe Davis found home is a great one.

        I finally found courage to give Cynthia Eden another chance, especially because I started to read romantic suspense novels lately, and I really hoped that this book would turn out to be a great read. It was fun and quick, but unfortunately, I did have few issues. 


Positive 

• Watch Me is a perfect choice is you want shorter book that will distract you from everyday problems. You will see that you will read it rather quickly because you just have to know what will happen next. 
• Chemistry. Second chance romance and dominant bastards we love to hate. This book has it all. Have you read Masters and Mercenaries series by Lexi Blake? Watch Me might remind you a little bit f that series (but without Doms and other kinky stuff).
• If you are not fan of suspense/ thriller /mystery novels where main focus is on crime, this will work out for you - Cynthia Eden is all about romance. 

Negative

• Everything happens too fast. I wish that author took time to develop plot more thoughtfully and not just give us glimpses of whys and hows.
• Stereotypes and cliches. This book is full of them, from characters to their interaction. 
• Predictable. You pretty much know what will happen from the start  which doesn't mean that you won enjoy reading this book.

Who should read this?

Fans of light suspense and everyone who liked previous books by Cynthia Eden.

The Backup Boyfriend (The Boyfriend Chronicles, #1) was one of the very good mm contemporary romances I read last years, so I was excited about reading the 2nd book in the series, even though Tyler, the MC, wasn't one of my favorite characters in the 1st book. He was actually kind of an asshole in that one as far as I remember, but I was curious to see if there's a more redeemable side to him, and fortunately- there was.

Deeply emotional, heart-wrenching & way too hot.

After his last break-up Tyler Hall is finally intent to stick to one relationship rule he kept on failing big time so far and that is: no more dating or giving 2nd, 3d, 4th etc. chances to his ex-boyfriends, but everything changes with the arrival of the one guy he could never forget, the guy who hurt him more than everyone else- his first boyfriend Memphis Haines. Memphis Haines, the famous stuntman and two-time cancer survivor is a champion at beating the odds, but there's one thing he failed big time when at collage. That thing is still on his mind and doesn't give him peace and that's Tyler Hall, the guy he left behind. 

The One That (almost) Got Away stories are always a bittersweet pleasure to read. The first half of the story was almost perfect for me. The present and past events are mixed, so that we're given insight on how Tyler & Memphis first met, how they began dating and what led to their heart-breaking break-up. Their memories from past were so lovely and emotional that I loved those parts even more than the present. Those  parts also helped me to connect with and understand Tyler more and he slowly became my favorite character in this installment. 

He was a totally different person from Tyler we met in the 1st book- sweet, funny and compassionate and it was impossible not to like him after we find out more about him. Memphis was also a likable MC. You can't, but to feel touched and sorry for him after hearing about his never-ending fight with cancer, but unlike Tyler, I found him at times full of himself. I'll explain the reason later on. We also get a sneak-a-peek in the lives of the secondary characters Dylan, Alec and Noah who was my 2nd favorite character. The story takes place 2 years after the 1st one, so there are a lot of changes in their lives, too.

The first half of the story made me wonder why most of my friends on Goodreads said that the 1st one was better than this one, because I felt completely different, but then came the second half of the story when my initial excitement started to lessen and I began to understand and agree with most of the mixed reviews about this installment. 

The atmosphere between Dylan and Memphis in the present was full of tension. Their break-up wasn't pretty and there're lot of things left unsaid. While Tyler is determined to leave it that way and move on, Memphis is intent on making things good between them again, because if there's one thing he regrets doing, that's breaking up with Tyler. The reason how he decided to win Tyler's trust back again is exactly one of the biggest reasons why my initial excitement lessened.

I felt like Memphis, even though the reasons behind his decision to leave Tyler considering his condition were in a way justifiable and noble, later on used that same condition to win (read: make) Tyler forgive him and get back with him. He should have been more honest and try harder at winning him back and I definitely didn't appreciate how later on in one situation he went back back to his old ways. I also felt that, in a way, Tyler forgave him so easily for everything and broke his promise to himself. To be exact I think he should have make him work harder for it, because he deserved that. Plus, as many other readers, I was annoyed with the constant presence and possessiveness of Memphis' ex wife in the story. I wanted her out. That's why 3.5 stars.

All in all, I agree with other readers that the 1st book was slightly better than this one. I didn't end up obsessing over the story as I thought I would at first, but it was good, I liked it enough and I'm definitely going to read the 3d one which will be Noah's story- wohooo!

Review: STRANGER by Megan Hart

I pay strangers to sleep with me.

I have my reasons... 

but they're not the ones you'd expect.

For starters, I'm a funeral director taking over my dad's business. Not exactly the kind of person you'd expect to fork over cash for the intimacy and urgency only skin-to-skin contact can create. Looking at me, you wouldn't have a clue I carry this little secret so close it creases up like the folds of a fan. Tight. Personal. Ready to unravel in the heat of the moment.

Unsurprisingly, my line of work brings me face-to-face with loss. So I decided long ago that paying for sex would be one of the best (and most arousing) ways to save myself from the one thing that would eventually cut far too deep.

But Sam was a mistake. Literally. I signed on to "pick up" a stranger at a bar, but took Sam home instead. And now that I've felt his heat, his sweat and everything else, can I really go back to impersonal?

Let's just hope he never finds out about my other life...

My review:

There are times when after only one book you know you have found yourself a favorite author. That is how I felt about Megan Hart after reading Broken, and so far I haven't been proven wrong.

I'd never really gone deep into why I love her books; I just knew they were awesome. And quite frankly, Hart's books usually get me so emotionally involved that I have no time or the wish to think about anything else. Well, Stranger was a bit different. Regardless of the heroine's profession, I found it to be a little lighter than the other MH books I've read, and I managed to pinpoint what it was that I love so much about her book (other than they're awesome).

All of the books were in the erotic romance category, but they weren't focused solely on that part. I'm kind of used to that type of books to be almost completely about the romance, but in Megan Hart's books, I get more than that. Yes, we meet the heroines at a point in their life when they meet their significant other--or just a significant one--but we also learn about every important aspect of their lives; the people that matter to them, and the people from their pasts that made an impact on their lives. Really, they're more books about women's lives, with romance included. And this is why I love reading them.

Here we got to meet Grace Frawley, a funeral director who prefers to pay men to sleep with her than to have a relationship. Oh, yes, Grace led an interesting life. Secret life.

I know I've said that this was a bit lighter than what I'm used to from MH, but those parts that were about Grace's job were rather depressing, no matter how much she told herself it was just work. Dealing with people who have lost their loved ones can't be that easy; neither can handling the dead. There were different cases, even odd ones, and one that made me cry just when I thought this would turn out to be a book by Megan Hart that didn't make me shed a tear.

While I'm on the topic of her business, it was actually a business she took over from her father. It was a fine example how some people meddle where they're not supposed to. Sometimes I thought Grace had more work cut out for her convincing her father the funeral home was doing okay than she had at her actual work. Parents...

The reason I found Stranger lighter, almost fun to read were the parts regarding Grace's secret. The reason she started paying men to be with her made me feel bad for her, but I really liked Jack, the man she started to regularly hire. If you have read Dirty, you've already met Jack. Dan and Elle actually were the ones that got him to consider this line of work. Speaking of past characters, you might remember Sarah or Sassy from Broken; she starred in one of Joe's stories. She was here, too. With Jack. I really like how the author makes these characters reappear. Anyway, Jack was sweet, and his and Grace's dates were fun.

Now to the romantic interest: Sam Stewart. You may have already guessed he's related to Dan, and you'd be right: they're brothers. They actually required Grace's services (so we got to see more of Dan and Elle, too). But before they met there, Grace and Sam had spent the night together. He was a mistake. One that came back.

Sam was a musician, so he kind of had me on his side from the start; I have a soft spot for artistic types. But Grace, who renounced relationships, was not so easy. Their romance was a very slow burn, but I loved it. I'll always remember Grace saying his name. Usually it was: Oh, Sam. Now get your out of the gutter; it wasn't like that; this was actually sweet. And, of course, this wouldn't be a Megan Hart book, if those two hadn't given me some heartache. In fact, at one point they made my heart stop, but in the end this is a romance, so it all worked out. As much as it can work out in a MH novel. No matter how they end, I always fear what happened after the book ended, but Grace & Sam--I think they'll make it work. Fingers crossed.

There were some other people involved in the plot, their stories interwoven like only Megan can do, and is best to experience firsthand. All I can do is say that I love the stories she writes and the way she writes them. The end.
