REVIEW: Archangel's Viper (GH series, #10) By Nalini Singh

Buy The Book:
AMAZON / B & NKOBO

Author's Page:

Genre:
Urban Fantasy/ Paranormal Romance

Summary on Goodreads:

Enter New York Times bestselling author Nalini Singh’s breathtakingly passionate Guild Hunter world with the story of a woman who isn’t a vampire or an angel…or human…

Once a broken girl known as Sorrow, Holly Chang now prowls the shadowy gray underground of the city for the angels. But it’s not her winged allies who make her a wanted woman—it’s the unknown power coursing through her veins. Brutalized by an insane archangel, she was left with the bloodlust of a vampire, the ability to mesmerize her prey, and a poisonous bite.

Now, someone has put a bounty on her head…

Venom is one of the Seven, Archangel Raphael’s private guard, and he’s as infuriating as he is seductive. A centuries-old vampire, his fangs dispense a poison deadlier than Holly’s. But even if Venom can protect Holly from those hunting her, he might not be able to save himself—because the strange, violent power inside Holly is awakening…

No one is safe.

REVIEW

“They let you drive now?" he said in a wondering tone of voice calibrated to get under her skin. "I leave for a couple of years and miss kitty's first steps. Did anyone take photos for the baby album I sent you?"

"It's full of pretty pictures." Holly bared her teeth at him in a caricature of a smile. "Honor is a little concerned about how I keep drawing you with your head cut off," she said in a deliberately thoughtful tone, "but an artist must follow her instincts.”

If you ever read one of my reviews of this series you are more than aware that this is one of my favorite uf/pnr series out there and that since book #5 I've become an obssessed fan-girl a hardcore fan of the potential next couple Aodhan & Illium. I might even say that I started that theory or was one of the first fans that saw the potential, so of course that after every next book I'm religiously praying that Nalini Singh will finally succumb to my dirty mind and that the next installment will be theirs, but the 10th book is actually Venom's book, so tough luck poor Purple, maybe next time. :'( xD

But, despite slight disappointment I was still fairly excited for this book, because Venom, a centuries-old vampire with his seductive viper's eyes has definitely been one of the most intriguing GH characters. I got even more excited after I read that he'll find his partner in Holly, Uram's mysterious creation. Unforutunately, when the book was finally published I was still in the phase "I've lost my reading mojo", so it took me some time to give it a chance, but when I did - I could not stop.

Without spoiling anything, my impression of this is installment is that the story was good, uber action-packed and suspenseful, but I'll have to agree with other fans who also described it as a bit lacking, especially in the romance department. The parts I've enjoyed the most were their witty and snarky dialogues that never failed to entertain me. That's why 3.5/ 5 stars. In the meantime, my never-ending prayer for Aodhan's & Illium's book as in mm couple book continues...

*** REVIEW ***

"What am I to call you now? Lord? Mr. Kere?" He grinned.
"How about 'the agonizing death you won't see coming until it's too late'?" Moros suggested.

I had this arc for a while, but to be honest I kept delaying reading it, because in this installment we finally get the story of the most intriguing Servants of Fate character- the infamous Lord of the Kere a.k.a Jason Moros who has been my favorite character since the very first book- Marked (SoF, #1) and considering my mixed feelings about the previous installment - Claimed (SoF, #2), I was afraid that the author might blow it. Now, after I had finished reading it, I'm happy to say that the author delivered an engaging, action-packed, dark, suspenseful, emotional and hot story for the most part. In fact, I would dare to say that this is the best installment of the series so far, especially the 2nd half of the book. I did have some "issues" as always when it comes to the series, but all in all I was pleased with the out-come.

Unlike Dec and Galena from the previous book who seemed to me as quite one-dimensional characters, Moros was just the opposite- witty, intimidating and a provocative bad-ass  hero who kept me entertained as usual, even though in this book we get to see more the man behind the cold and calculating front he puts up for everyone. He had definitely found a worthy match in Aislin The Charon. The up-tight, diplomatic and serious Charon turned out to be more than meets the eye-  caring, more open-minded and showing some serious bad-ass fighting skills. Their chemistry was scorching and there's this one shower scene I wouldn't mind reading all over again.

The parts I wish the author had done a bit differently:
~ I wish she had made Moros' character a bit more edgier instead of humanizing him so much. This is a genre that allows that freedom the most imo and that's why I love it.
~ Some parts of the world-building are still a bit confusing to me, like Moros' family and their roles etc.
~ I felt that some parts of the story weren't given enough attention and the other way around.
~ And it also wouldn't have hurt the story if it had had some kind of 3-4 pages long epilogue.
All in all, I would give the 1st half of the story 3 stars, but the 2nd half 4 unputdownable stars, so I'll settle for 3.5 stars for the whole book. I wonder whose book is next? Hm, maybe Trevor's? I guess, we'll find out soon enough.
Watch out people! Chaos is coming... *scary movie music playing*

Synopsis On Goodreads:

It’s not easy for a young gay artist like Jordan Carson to grow up in Jefferson, Wisconsin, where all anyone seems to care about in middle school and high school are the sports teams. But Jordan was lucky. He met Owen Nelson in the second grade, and they’ve been BFFs ever since. Owen is a big, beautiful blond and their school’s champion wrestler. No one messes with Owen, or with anyone close to him, and he bucks popular opinion by keeping Jordan as his wingman even after Jordan comes out at school.

Their friendship survives, but Jordan’s worst enemy may be himself: he can’t seem to help the fact that he is head-over-heels in love with a hopeless case—his straight friend, Owen. Owen won’t let anything take Jordan’s friendship away, but he never counted on Jordan running off to find a life of his own. Owen will have to face the nature of their relationship if he’s to win Jordan back.

RATING: 4/5 stars

***REVIEW***

Who said I can't read a super-cute, fun, romantic and butterfly-inducing story and enjoy it? I admit, I prefer a bit darker, raw and emotional stories, but basically if the story and the writing style is good I can read anything. I've always wanted to read smth by E. Easton and considering my mm friends-to-lovers/GFY plot-line addiction Superhero seemed as the perfect choice. And it was.

"Without a doubt, the luckiest thing that ever happened to me was that I became best friends with Owen Nelson."

I fell in love with Jordan's and Owen's story right in the first chapter. They became inseparable best friends in the second grade of elementary school, their love for comics and action figures being the thing that brought them together. The main voice of this story was Jordan a.k.a Jordy who re-tells us their story from the very first day they met, but later on we get Owen's pov too. The sweet, brave, selfless, fun and charming geek Jordy as the MC was so easy to love. It was crush at first sight for him when he met Owen and with every next day that love and longing only became stronger and stronger. Too bad Owen was straight and didn't want Jordy that way or is he really?

Owen, the untypical jock, was also a likable character. I loved how protective, supportive and accepting he was of Jordan. His insecurities over his sexual identity and his relationship with Emily tended to be a bit frustrating for a hardcore mm lover like myself, but overall the story was simply beautiful, touching and swoon-worthy. Other than mm romance, this book also deals with themes such as coming out and bullying.

Btw. Excuse me for my bluntness, but I still don't get why did people on GR marked this as YA fiction just because there was no penetration. Well, they did everything else, so I definitely wouldn't say this is your typical YA read, more of a coming of age/new adult story, but hey, that's just me.

“Say yes, Jordan,” he said, shifting closer.
“No,” I said.
Owen smiled. “Close enough.” And then he kissed me.”

Highly recommend this novella (around 90 pages) to every mm reader with a "fetish" for friends-to-lover romances and anyone who is interested in this genre and doesn't know where to start. This was another winner!

So when Meg has a dream about blood and black feathers in the snow, Simon Wolfgard—Lakeside's shape-shifting leader—wonders whether their blood prophet dreamed of a past attack or of a future threat.

***REVIEW***

This year I've said goodbye to some of my favorite urban fantasy series and welcomed some new ones which have the potential to find themselves on my favorite shelf. This is one of them. Dark, action-packed with great pnr world-building which is only getting better and better with every new installment and interesting, endearing and fun characters.

In the Murder of Crows the relations between the terra indigene and humans are escalating and therefore resulting in a lot of bloodbath on both sides, the biggest fight which will happen at the very ending. The side effect of these events is also the increasing number of Meg's prophecies which will save a lot of lives of The Others and make her even a bigger hero and more integral part of them. The author doesn't let us forget that the terra indigiene are far from human. They are dangerous, short-tempered and ruthless, especially if you try to hurt one of their own, but there's also an endearing, almost human-alike side to them which they show through their friendship and protectiveness of Meg and other people who earned their trust and respect.

My only "complaints" are again- the lack of romance and the multiple povs which  can become a bit exhausting from time to time. I understand the reason for the lack of romance, because Meg, even Simon, aren't in the right place right now for something more than friendship, but what can I say- the romance reader in me is getting more and more impatient to see them together, because they seem so right for each other and I hope we won't have to wait for too long. Now, before diving into the the next book, first I'm going to get my fix of romance!

Highly recommended to every urban fantasy fan!

~ REVIEW ~

One of the goals I set for myself this year when it comes to reading is to try some genres I rarely read. One of them is historical romance, so that was one of the main reasons beside the sexy cover I picked this book up.

~ Why it didn't work out for me:

~ Unfortunately, after reading this book I'm even more sure than ever that historical romances aren't the right genre for me and that I should stick to contemporary. Why is that? First of all, I'm not a fan of the courteous way people communicate in historical romances. Secondly and probably the most important reason is the inferior portrayal of women in this genre. Women are seen only as a source for increasing population and they have little to none right in comparison to men which bothered me a lot while reading this book. Yes, I've read a lot of classics from this genre which are still one of my favorite books ever, but no offense to anyone- I don't think this book is on the same level.

~ I couldn't connect to the characters or their story. This refers especially to the main character Eloise who I considered weak, naive and at times- a true drama queen. But then again, I also think that the biggest reason for that is the era she was born in. She was raised to keep her mouth shut and be the obedient woman, daughter and wife like the rest of the women of that time, so I can't really blame her.

~ The over-used plot. To be honest I feel that we've seen/read this plot too many times so far. It lacked originality and therefore I was bored through the most of the book.

I did enjoy some of the sexy banter between the main couple occasionally, but the book as a whole failed to leave some bigger impression on me. That is why 2 stars. Read it and decide for yourself.

Excerpt

“Let’s have a kiss to seal your oath,” Wolf said shortly, and bent his head to hers.

Eloise had thought Lord Wolf would give her a token kiss, like that given by a bridegroom after the marriage vows had been exchanged. Some cold and bloodless meeting of lips to remind her that she belonged to him now. But his mouth took hers with a kiss of such ardent fervor she could barely stand beneath it, her hands clinging to his shoulders. She was dazed, her body under assault, not expecting the wave of violent passion that swept through her in the wake of his embrace.

His kiss was bold and darkly possessive. Lord Wolf was sure of her acquiescence, she realized with a shock. Nor was he wrong. Eloise found her lips parting beneath his, her tiny gasp an opportunity for his tongue to slip inside.

Seeming to sense her surrender, he lifted her slightly, pressing her against the cold stone wall, just as Simon had done, and lowered his head again to claim her lips.

He tasted of heat and long summer nights, his scent as well as his hands enticing her closer, reminding her of spice and oranges. She had meant to resist, but it was impossible. His tongue traced slowly along her lower lip, then dipped back inside, stroking and flickering, promising the kind of sensual pleasures she had only dreamt of before in the privacy of her bed.

In a few ecstatic seconds, she had forgotten Simon’s boyish, enthusiastic kisses. This was beyond mere physical desire. His body weighted strongly against hers, he no longer needed to hold her still. His mouth teased and played her, one hand cupping her face, the other stroking her long hair.

Eloise moaned under his kiss, her eyes closing with pleasure. She felt new worlds opening up as he touched her, parts of herself suddenly springing to life under his hands. Her breasts tingled in a way she barely recognized, her nipples taut, pushing against the neckline of her gown. Between her thighs a strangely sweet ache had begun to throb, her flesh there slick with unaccustomed longing.

Eloise drew back, turning her head away so he could not kiss her again. “Please,” she whispered.

His gaze followed her, heavy-lidded with desire. “Please yes, or please no?”

GAGA’S “EDGE of Glory” played in his ear. Damn. Quit.He reached out and pawed at the edge of the coffee table until he finally felt the phone. His fingers found the mute button and he clicked it. Peace. He tried to roll over. Heavy.

“Merwaorwr.”

“Mewr.”

Claws dug into his chest as the weight lifted, then disappeared. “Go back to sleep.” He rolled over until his face and body were pressed against the back of the couch. Ouch. His dick hurt. Sleep. Ouch.

Well, damn. Slowly he rolled onto his back and stared at the ceiling. He glanced to the side. Clancy and Yerby gazed at him like they could command him with will force alone to open the tuna. “Hang in there, guys.”

Oh man. Not hung over. He’d had half a beer. But here he lay fully clothed on his couch, aching in his bones and feeling like someone had kicked him in the nuts. That would be him. He’d done it to himself.
He swung his legs over the side, sat up on the edge of the couch, and dropped his head. Four eyes stared up at him. “Go open it yourself.”

Three times. He’d wanked himself into oblivion three times while rewinding that frigging porno. Was there one line he didn’t engrave in his brain? Every “unh, unh, unh. Fuck me harder” was emblazoned in his memory. Jesus, Ballew. Yeah, Jesus was the operative word. But if he was going to hell for jerking off, he’d be taking every male in the world with him.

Of course, he didn’t just masturbate; he wanked to gay porn. What the hell is that about? Truth? He’d been kicked in the teeth so many times by so many women, the idea of fucking a nice uncomplicated man kind of did it for him. Well, not seriously, but the theory was attractive. And no, he would not be sharing this revelation with the guys on the job site.

The bang on his door about sent him into outer space. Who the hell? Nobody came here. He didn’t share his address much. No poker with the boys or make-out sessions with the girls. His place. His. Who was it?

The knocking came again.

Shit!

He jumped up. “Yeah?” The cats looked up at his loud voice.

“Billy, it’s Jim.” The voice came through the door.

Jim. Billy looked around, grabbed the laptop, closed it tight, and slid it onto the end table. Lube. Shit. He shoved the open tube into the drawer, then staggered over to the front door. How much did he smell like sex? Damn, his sweats were halfway to his knees. He dragged them back up, then opened the door.

“Hi. Sorry, overslept.” He ran a hand through his hair.

Jim Carney was a little older than him and a good guy, if a bit of a hound dog. He grinned. “Sorry. My truck broke down. I was kind of close to here and remembered your address. Thought I’d see if I could get a ride.”

“Uh, sure.” He glanced over his shoulder. It felt strange having somebody here. “Come on in. I need to feed my cats and take a quick shower, if you want to wait.”

“Sure. Too far to walk and all uphill.” He stepped in. “You have cats?”

Billy looked at Jim. The guy had a tough face with a broken nose that some women liked. “Yeah, I got two. You like cats?”

“No. Just think it’s kind of funny that you do.” He smacked Billy’s shoulder. “You crazy cat lady, you.”
Well, hell. “Make yourself at home.” Kind of. He walked into the kitchen, the boys behind him, and scooped out some cat food into both dishes. “Here ya go, guys.” He raised his voice. “Don’t let feline haters make you feel bad.”

Jim laughed from the living room. “This is quite a place you have. Jesus, man, what are you, some closet decorator?”

Billy frowned and walked into the living room. “No, I just like having a nice place of my own.”

“But you’re so damned neat.” He was holding a glass globe Billy had found in a yard sale.

“So?” He took the globe and put it back on the shelf.

“Nothing. No wonder women like you so much.”

“I’m taking a quick shower.” He started for the bedroom, stopped and grabbed the laptop, then went into his room—small with a big bed.

He glanced at his watch, still ticking on his wrist. Double shit. If he didn’t hurry, they’d both be late for work. Saturday shifts were good for making extra cash, but not if he didn’t get there.

He stepped under the water. Too cold. Shaved so fast he nicked himself and finally got some clothes on and hurried back into the living room. Jim sat on the couch holding a book, the two cats staring at him from across the room. He stared back. Billy laughed. “Have they got you cornered?”

“Shit, man, those two are scary. What are they, ninja attack cats?”

Billy sat and pulled on his work boots. He nodded at the book. “What you got?”

Jim held out the book. “This is heavy shit, my man.” The copy of Jane Eyre kind of weighed down his hand.

Billy tried to keep his brows from scrunching together. “I just like to read. I didn’t get to go to school too long, so I read, okay?” He didn’t say he read because it was like a fucking gift to finally be able to do it.
Jim set down the book and stood up. “You really are different, you know?”

“Thanks a shitload.”

“I don’t mean it bad. You’re just—not like most of the guys.”

Man, was he tired of hearing that.

SPOTLIGHT TOUR & GIVEAWAY: TWICE A TEXAS BRIDE by Linda Broday

Howdy, ma’am. I’m Rand Sinclair the middle brother in the Bachelors of Battle Creek series – Twice a Texas Bride.

What is your dream vacation?

I would love to whisk Callie away to the fanciest hotel I can find and threaten to shoot anyone who comes near the door. After wining and dining her, we’d hibernate in our room. I’d carry her to the soft bed and slowly undress her piece by piece. Then I’d leave a trail of kisses over every inch of her luscious body. We’d make slow, passionate love until we got so tired we couldn’t. The next morning we do it again then I’d take her shopping and buy only the most expensive things. I wish I could afford to treat her the way a lady like her deserves. She needs diamonds and pearls, not working her fingers to the bone on a run-down ranch.

What is your greatest strength?

I don’t know how to quit. I’m just too damn stubborn sometimes. That’s something the outlaw Nate Fleming didn’t realize. He didn’t know how hard it would be to go through me to get to Callie. I’d crawl through hell on my hands and knees for her. Fleming just never got that and it cost him.

What is your biggest fear?

I’m terrified that I’ll wake up one morning and Callie will be gone. Everyone except my brothers always leave. My parents started my issue with trust after they disappeared and I was taken to an orphanage at five years old. After that, each time I let down my guard and allowed a woman into my heart, she always left. When Callie came along, I couldn’t trust her for the longest. Even now I live in fear that she’ll grow tired of the constant work of trying to keep the ranch going. God, I pray she never does.

About the Book:

“Linda Broday’s books always take me back to a west that feels true. Her love stories run deep with emotion. A delightful read.” — Jodi Thomas, New York Times bestselling author of Promise Me Texas

Callie leaned into him, borrowing his strength. “I’m so tired of being scared, Rand.”

“Running away won’t change that. Trust me with your secrets. There’s no reason to hold back any longer.”

She knew he was right. It was time to come clean.

“Start with your name,” he said.

Left with emotional scars from his time in an orphanage, Rand Sinclair has vowed never to marry. But when he discovers Callie Quinn and a small orphan boy hiding on his ranch, he can’t help but open his home to the desperate runaways.

Callie has been betrayed by every man she’s ever known. While she’s grateful for Rand’s incredible kindness, she knows it’s only a matter of time before he shows his true colors. But she needs this safe haven—maybe the outlaw on her trail won’t find them here. Yet as Rand slowly uncovers her secret fears, they each come to realize that the only way to keep her safe is for Rand to risk everything to offer her the protection of his name…and his heart.

Toby barreled out the kitchen door, trailed by Biscuit. “What’cha doin’?”

“Hi, pardner.” Brett ruffled Toby’s dark hair. “I brought you something.”

“What is it?”

“Your very own tepee.”

“To keep?” Toby’s eyes widened and his big grin spread.

“Maybe. We’ll see how it goes. If you mind your elders, you can keep it. If not, I’ll have to take it back.”

“I’m the best boy in the whole world.”

Brett’s grunt seemed to say that time would tell as he arranged twelve long poles on the ground and began tying the tops of three together with a length of rawhide. “Where do you want to put this, Rand?”

“Let’s move it over by the woodpile, where it’s out of the way.” He was going to be the only white man with an Indian tepee on his ranch. How had this sorry state of affairs come to pass? But he wouldn’t say no. It meant too much to Brett and to Toby.

Callie came from the house looking fit to be tied. “Hello, Brett. I hope this isn’t what it looks like.”

“Miss Callie, I wanted something special for Toby to play in, that’s all. If you draw the line at him sleeping out here, that’s all right. It’s up to you to decide when and how often you want the boy to use it.” Brett gave her a smile. “I’d never undermine you.”

“This could be very magical to a child,” Rand said gently.

“Please, ma’am?” Toby begged. “I wanna be an Indian.”

Biscuit gave a loud whine and spun around in a circle as though she too was adding her two cents’ worth.

“Please?” Toby persisted.

When she lifted her eyes to Rand, he gave her a lopsided grin and a wink. Getting tangled up in her warm whiskey gaze could be quite pleasurable, he found.

“Oh, all right.” Callie threw up her hands. “But I won’t have you sleeping out here, young man. You’ll play in it only when I give you permission. And you’ll have chores to do each day before you can play. Understand?”

“Yes, ma’am.”

“It’s too dangerous out here at night anyway, with that mountain lion hanging around,” Rand said. “I’ll keep an eye on him during the day. I don’t want you to worry.”

Toby hugged Callie, then threw his arms around Brett’s waist. “Thank you. I’m glad we came here.”

Brett returned Toby’s hug, then knelt to rub Biscuit’s head. “Now tell me where you got such a fine-looking animal.”

Rand stood watching the pint-sized squirt relay what little facts he knew. He already loved this little kid. Whatever had happened to them, it made him happy that he could help bring a light to the boy’s eyes. He remembered how dull they’d been when he’d first found them in the run-down bunkhouse last week. His mind turned back time to the days following his, Cooper’s, and Brett’s escape from the orphan train. To avoid detection, they’d slept during the day and traveled by the light of the moon, eating food whenever they found some or managed to kill a rabbit or squirrel. Cooper was always the one to watch over them and fight when things called for it. He’d once tried to kill Tolbert Early in a bathhouse for attacking Brett.

Toby had that same protective instinct. Rand only prayed he could help the boy stay a boy a while longer. Once you became a man, you could never go back.

“Where are you, brother?” Brett asked.

“Just thinking that you’d best explain what we need to do.”

With Biscuit supervising and pretty much getting in the way, they all pitched in erecting the tepee, which was made from buffalo hide.

Working side by side with Callie proved the best part. Each time their hands touched, a current ran up Rand’s arm. He couldn’t imagine what might happen if the touching involved a bed and the scent of night around them. He’d probably just explode faster than a load of nitroglycerin. Likely find pieces of him three states over.

The haunted look had begun to fade from her eyes a little, and she wasn’t as tense and anxious as when they first arrived.

Maybe, just maybe, the fear would be gone soon.

And then he intended to kiss the daylights out of her.

Of course he’d go slow. He closed his eyes and watched it play out in his head.

He’d start by kissing each eyelid, then move to her shell-like ears and trail kisses down her long slender throat.

Tiny nibbles at the corners of her mouth.

Trace the seam with his tongue.

Breathe her fragrance.

Whisper tender words.

Only then would he press his lips fully against hers and take all that she wanted to give.

And then…

“Rand!”

It took a minute to sink in that someone was trying to get his attention. “What?”

“Where did you go?” Brett asked. “I need you to help me get these sewn buffalo hides around this tripod and cone I’ve made. Of course, if you’d rather take a nap—”

“Just show me what to do,” Rand snapped.

As they worked, Rand’s gaze kept straying to Callie’s soft, round curves. The woman was going to be the death of him yet.

Even so, he was realizing he’d die a happy man if he could only get a taste of her lips.
