"The cloud started it."

Many thanks to Harlequin for approving my request! I was so excited when I got the email from NetGalley, I had to reread it to make sure my eyes weren't playing a trick on me.

The Rose is set in the same world as The Red, and that was all I needed to know to put this book on my must-read list. I figured if I enjoyed it even half as much as I did The Red, it would be great. The Rose showed me how silly it was of me to expect so little. It surpassed The Red. I was in a reader's paradise these last few days I spent in the company of Lia and August. I knew Tiffany Reisz has a wonderfully wicked imagination — she proved it time and again — but this was on a whole other level. Greek mythology level.

Not knowing how exactly The Red and The Rose are connected, I reread The Red before jumping into the enchanting world of The Rose. Was that necessary? No. But I'm glad I did it. Lia and August's erotic and non-erotic adventures were captivating, but having a look into how Mona and Spencer's marriage turned out — well, I liked that, too, to say the least. Certainly, all the mentions of Malcolm were appreciated more than they would've been had I not reacquainted myself with the story of The Red. One of the first things we learn about the main character Lia is that she's involved in certain illegal activities at which I chuckled and thought: her great-grandfather would be proud!

The story starts with a party, a precious gift, a new acquaintance, and an unwelcome guest. Though her great-grandfather would've been proud, Lia's business could put her and others in a lot of trouble, so it had to remain secret. When the unwelcome guest came with blackmail on his mind, Lia was backed into a corner. Her way out was August Bowman, the new acquaintance. They made a deal, and thus began the days of erotic fantasies fulfillment and healing.

The gift Lia received, the Rose kylix, had the power making erotic fantasies come true. Lia and August, both well-versed in Greek mythology, had fantasies involving characters and stories from those myths. It's been a long time since I read ancient Greek literature. I hardly remember anything, but I do know it wasn't nearly as interesting or fun or erotic as this. Yes, those parts were all that, but I couldn't help but like the parts where Lia and August were Lia and August a little more. I grew fond of both of their characters early on and I wanted to read about them as much as possible. Lia — "a kitten with a switchblade". And August — that man was like sunshine, a mischievous sunshine. I adored them both, 'cause they were both so freaking adorable. Their story was one that would make me laugh at one part, and make me teary-eyed at the next. Not to forget it was a smoking hot magical story. Of course, since Tiffany Reisz wrote it, the story had an air of mystery surrounding it, and by the end it had some major twists.

To summarize, this is an imaginative, sweet, erotic tale with a twist, and laugh-out-loud moments. In the honor of those moments, and August, and a naughty cloud, I picked the quote with which I started my review.

In the Acknowledgements section, Ms. Reisz asks: Shall we go for three? I say: Yes, please! And then for four, and five, and six...

Tiffany Reisz is among my top 5 favorite authors, and there’s a reason for that.

Just when I think she couldn’t possibly surprise me – she does. Gosh, the way this woman writes… it’s so smooth, seemingly effortless, but also so intricate, little disturbing, and very kinky.

I wanted to read this book ever since I read The Queen, where Søren says to Nora, “So this is the scene I inspired.” (or something like that) Hah! Now I know which scene he had in mind! Anyhow, The Red is the story Nora Sutherlin wrote, who is the main character of the Original Sinners series. But it’s completely unrelated to that. Actually even if you’ve never read anything by Reisz, this could be a good place to start, to give you a taste of how she writes erotica.

Because, mind you, there is a difference between smut and erotica. Erotica is art. And I think even if Reisz tried to write regular old smut, she couldn’t. Sure this is dirty, at times perverted, and twisted, but it’s So. Well. Written!

Art & sex are two words that best describe this novel. Each chapter bears the title of a certain famous painting and brings you a sizzling hot erotic fantasy. My favorite chapter is chapter 8, because we see Mona accepting who she became, refusing to be shamed for loving sex. Women are so often shamed, labeled, seen as ‘whores’. Here, Mona takes that label and wears it proudly.

Art should be dangerous, you know. It should say something to society that society doesn’t want to hear. Do you know what opposite of art is? Propaganda. There’s too much of that in the world. Not enough art.

In my favorite fictional world of the Original Sinners, Nora Sutherlin is well-known as a Dominatrix and an author. Her books were described as "delicious works of erotica, each one more popular with readers than the last", and I've wanted to read all of them. I didn't think I'd ever be able to do that, but lately it seems like Ms. Reisz hears my book wishes, and makes them come true. She gifted us with a free Kingsley novella, then wrote a short novel about him (still impatiently waiting for the news on when it will be published), and The Red, one of Nora's works mentioned in the OS series.

The Red certainly is a delicious work of erotica, and it tells the story of Mona Lisa St. James, a hopelessly indebted owner of an art gallery and Malcolm, a dangerous, devastatingly handsome, mysterious man who promised to get her out of her troubles, and the handful of nights they spent together over the span of one year. As per their agreement during those nights Mona submitted to Malcolm in any way he wished. He played games with her, and was very good at the games he played. He was so good at it, Mona often wondered if what happened was a dream or a hallucination, but neither explanation fit the bill. One thing was for sure, those nights were a heady combination of art and erotica, each scene more interesting than the last. They were quite imaginative. Oh, and Malcolm reminded me of Kingsley, so that was another plus.

As time went by, feelings grew, and for Mona a year became too little time to have with Malcolm. Saying goodbye to him after their year was up seemed like a horrible prospect, but time stops for no woman in love. Then, in the last chapter, all was revealed about the mysterious Malcolm. It was a big twist, one that could have left me feeling sad had it not been for a certain someone. I finished reading the book with a smile on my face thinking: "Nicely done, Ms. Reisz. Nicely done."

I was stoked to get this ARC. It's a book by one of my favorite authors loosely tied to my favorite series, and I was kinda in the mood to read something the author described as -- and I'm paraphrasing here -- porn, porn, and more porn. She was totally underselling it, in my opinion. It was a fine erotic fantasy, which made me think, and gave me feels. What more could I ask for? Oh, I know! That Ms. Reisz writes another Nora's book. Yes, please!

ARC Review: DIRTY DOCTOR by Whitney G.

Being a doctor in New York City has never been easy. Especially for someone like me who has a private practice and an incompetent staff who insists on leaving me to fill in for them.

Over the past six months, I've performed one too many pap smears, three too many "breast exams," and scrubbed in on several reconstructive surgeries. (This would be acceptable if I was still interested in general medicine, but I'm not. I'm supposed to be a goddamn therapist...)

When my team finally came to their senses and decided to bring someone more competent into the practice last month, I was actually elated.

Until I realized that our new "doctor" was none other than the woman I was supposed to meet over dinner two weeks ago. The same woman who stood me up with nothing more than an "I can't meet you anymore, sorry," after we agreed to move our online talks into reality.

I haven't forgotten any of the filthy fantasies she told me about, and I never deleted our dirty messages. And if she thinks that I'm going to act like a "professional" and pretend like that shit never happened, she has another thing coming...

It's been a long while since I read anything by Whitney G. Even longer since Reasonable Doubt and its lovable asshole Andrew, so when Dirty Doctor appeared in my inbox promising to be a story just for sexy fun, I thought to myself that yes, I could go for something like that. After all, I couldn't remember the last time I read a book just for sexy fun. I still can't, and that is troubling. Anyways, the Dirty Doctor...

The story of the Dirty Doctor and the Resident had elements not unfamiliar in a Whitney G. book. In more ways than one it reminded me of Reasonable Doubt. I can't say I was too bothered by that, but I also can't say it had the same effect. My favorite of the two is crystal clear. To be fair, going in I didn't expect the Dirty Doctor to dethrone Andrew no matter how dirty he was. This was a book I chose to be my easy read on a lazy Saturday, and it filled that function.

Garrett (the Dirty Doctor) and Natalie, the main characters of this romance, first met online through a dating site. According to the site, they were a perfect match, but neither made a move to make a date in person or exchange real names. What they did was chat a lot about everything. Many emails were exchanged full of sexy banter throughout the novella. Whitney G's characters do seem to like that form of communication. So, the chats continued until a date was finally set for them to meet in person over dinner. Unfortunately for Garrett, his date stood him up.

Garrett is a doctor at a private practice and the owner, and Natalie became a new resident at the same practice. Neither of them knew that until Natalie came to their dinner and realized her date is also her new boss, at which point she did the "really mature" thing and fled before he saw her. Garrett would realize his no-show date was the new resident some time later at which point he would start acting "really maturely" and "professionally" towards Natalie all leading up to them hooking up and ultimately getting involved in a serious relationship.

Whitney G. described this novella as having no real plot, just fun, sexy banter, and sex. The first three were there, but the fourth happened only once and I found that a little surprising.

All in all, for a lazy-Saturday read, this novella did alright.

ARC Review: BEG FOR IT by Megan Hart

Megan Hart is "best known for writing erotic fiction that sometimes makes you cry", and that is what keeps me coming back to her books. Beg for It didn't make me cry, nor did it make me sad as some of her other books did, but I still liked it. Truth be told, I didn't pick it up looking for a good cry, but to see if Megan Hart's books with BDSM elements work for me or not, because that seems to be the direction her newer stories are taking. The verdict is that yes, they could work. I liked the really sad, vanilla ones better, but this was all right, too.

Beg for It is the love story of Corinne and Reese who were a couple when they were younger. A happy couple in love who in the bedroom were Ma'am and boy. BDSM-wise their relationship was DS. No SM, for which I was glad. They were happily in love, but life took them in different directions. Corinne wanted a career right where they were living, and Reese wanted to get as far away as possible, which he did. She got her career, got married, had children, got divorced. He became a successful businessman. After many years he came back to his hometown, and in Corinne's life. The anger they had towards each other showed its ugly face, but so did the attraction that was still there. Old flames were reignited, and Corinne and Reese were once again Ma'am and boy, only older and wiser that hopefully wouldn't repeat their old mistakes.

Almost all the books by Megan Hart were the ones she wrote for Harlequin MIRA, and to me those were stories about women's lives with romance as one part of it. Beg for It was mostly focused on the romance. We learn about the other parts of Corinne's and Reese's lives, but romance is in the spotlight, and we get to read about both heir past and present relationship. I like it when stories alternate between past and present, and Megan Hart does it especially well.

Megan Hart's writing skills plus second-chance romance equals a winning combination.

It was okay.

This book and I, we weren't on the best of terms for a long time. Odd, considering M/M + kink = my favorite combination, and that so far if there was anything I could count on in L.A. Witt's books is that they would be hot. This one failed to meet my great expectations.

The story didn't have a fan in me for several reasons.

Its plot is perfectly described in the blurb, so no need to repeat it. I will say the part about kink was the one that made my finger click on that Request button on NetGalley. I found it interesting the main characters would connect through a kinky dating app, and in a meeting no less. It said they were a match made in the dungeon, and I wished to know more. Unfortunately, it was Jon & Rick's D/s relationship with their kinky games I found underwhelming, and that is the last thing I'd want to feel about kinky games. As it was, Jon & Rick played light. Fans of glitterkink would probably enjoy this more. As for me, it was much lighter BDSM than I'd have preferred. I keep thinking that perhaps I would've liked it more had the story had Rick's POV because he was the submissive in their relationship. I'll never know as Jon's was the only perspective I got to read.

That brings me to the issues I had with Jon's POV. For one, I would've edited out quite a few of his thoughts, including those preceding his nights with Rick. He would go on and on about the endless possibilities of what he could do to Rick, and then actually not do much. After he started seeing Rick his life was mostly work and Rick, and the work part... well, I didn't need so much of it. He pretty much hated his job, and to read about it over and over again wasn't fun. Also not fun: every time Rick would do something Jon didn't tell him to do, or took charge even a little, Jon would call him out on it. It made me mad, and it made me wish they were vanilla. I think that would've been fun, and hot, so, so hot.

My major issue with this book was its length, as in I wished it was much shorter. As to why, I believe it's clear from what I've said so far.

That said, it was thanks to those many pages that at some point towards the end, I started to get into the book. This turned out to be a story that slowly and unexpectedly grew on me. All those things that had annoyed me (as listed above) didn't annoy me anymore. I began to root for Jon to find his happy ending, and that was the only thing that mattered.

In conclusion, even with all those issues I had with it, reading Not Safe for Work wasn't a total bust as I had started to think it would be. We parted ways on a sweet note. So, yay!

After more than 400 pages of pure urban fantasy my inner mm romance fangirl was in need of some dirty mm loving so I fed her this short story- Loser Takes It All by K. Knight and the story turned out to be just like that and more- short, fast-paced, kinky & fun (add to that- freebie) involving two super-hot college boys and one terribly wrong or better say deliciously good gone lost poker game.

There was some light bdsm involved (spanking, whipping etc.), the characters were fun, especially Scott The Dom and I'm intrigued enough to read the rest of the installments of the series to see if there'll grow something more out of their passionate one night stand. Plus, it's a gay-for-you mm romance, so the resistance is futile. 3 stars, because I rarely rate more this type of "bookporns", but if you're in need of something short, dirty & fun- I definitely recommend it!

ARC Review: PAIN SLUT (The Subs Club, #2) by J.A. Rock

Summary:

Honestly, I’m ready to take a step back from the Subs Club. Making the kink world a safer place for subs is the sort of bandwagon I’d have boarded as an idealist in my early twenties, but now I’m a pragmatist in my late twenties. I prefer to focus on adopting and raising a child.

But unexpected factors inevitably derail my plans. Like Drix Seger—attractive and the first genuine sadist I’ve encountered. If I were not in the process of renouncing my masochistic ways and becoming the normal, responsible potential father the adoption agency wants to see, Drix and I might do well together.

But he has a foolish name and belongs to a cult of vampyres, and I am quitting kink. So why does Drix’s infatuation with blood and biting make me so hot I can’t think straight? And why, when he looks at me, does he seem to see something beyond a basket case with a stick up my ass?

Four books will not be enough! I was all happy and content The Subs Club would be a four-book series after I finished the first installment, but that was then and this is now. Now I am older and wiser, and now, having loved The Subs Club, and Pain Slut, and because I am currently having a lot of fun reading about Kamen in Manties in a Twist, I don't want to say goodbye to these characters. I would like for each main character to get another book. They all have more to tell us. Even Gould, who doesn't talk much, I bet he'd have enough to say for two books. Anyways, that's what I'm wishing for right now. Book genie, you know what to do. Make it happen.

Moving onto Miles, the main man in Pain Slut. Before I started this novel, all I knew about him were a few things I remembered from The Subs Club: he was smart, he wore cardigans a lot, he was the only pain slut in their group, and seemed to be the most serious one there. Therefore, I knew his story wouldn't be as fun to read as Dave's was, and it wasn't. It may be strange to say this, but that was one of the reasons I liked this book. Miles and Dave are so different, it was only to be expected their stories would be too, and I was impressed by how different Miles's and Dave's perspectives were. So, Miles didn't make me laugh out loud, but he did win me over in all his perfectionist, overthinking nature.

Of course, Miles being Miles, he was stressed out about the whole adoption process, and with making sure he looked as the best future father possible, and then being one when he finally adopted a child. His plan of being a superior father included saying goodbye to his masochistic side, and all kinky games. Then he met Drix Seger, and went all Twilight.

Drix was a vampyre, meaning he was one of the people who believed they shared traits with vampires; he thought time was a meaningless construct; he lived in the now; he made decisions about his life without planing every single little thing... He was very unlike Miles. But he was something which held a lot of appeal to Miles: a sadist. Be still Miles's beating heart! That's why Miles decided to postpone quitting kink, and indulge in it for a while longer with Drix. When he got a baby, he'd let go of both the vampyre and kink, but over time letting go of either became more and more unappealing, and it became clear some change in plans was in order.

When I finished The Subs Club, I was already a huge fan of all the main characters: Dave, Miles, Kamen, and Gould, and Dave's dom D. After Pain Slut my feelings are the same. I'm just adding two persons on the list: Drix, and the kid. Drix, the vampyre PI was adorable, lovely to read about, and he made Miles happy, more relaxed, and dress in normal people clothes. I can't think of one thing that I didn't like about him. As Kamen would say, he was awesome possum, and bit of a miracle worker seeing how he managed to reduce Miles's stress level repeatedly, and that did involve some good old SM. The kink content was at times a little scary for me, and most of it was my first time reading about it, but Miles enjoyed it, therefore I was happy for him. He & Drix were simply adorable. Since I'm in the middle of book three right now, I can say with certainty they become even more cute after the end of Pain Slut.

The ending was my favorite part. I wish I could say why without it being spoilery, but I don't see how. Suffice it to say, it was so incredible I get all teary-eyed thinking about it. I loved everything about it. Well, except that the book was over. I did not like that I was finished with it.

As with the previous book, I enjoyed the scenes with all the main characters together, because they have a special kind of friendship. Plus, I always enjoy their discussions about BDSM and the Subs club. It was one of such scenes that would be the one I found the funniest. It wasn't a discussions on kink or their club, but Miles and his new relationship, and who made it so funny was Dave, of course. The things that guy says is pure gold.

This was also the book where Kamen met his dom. Lovely meeting, that was. I'd say I can't wait to read about them more, but I already am reading Manties in a Twist, sooo...

So, all in all, amazeballs book in an amezeballs series. I don't want it to end any time soon, so four more books would be much appreciated. I don't ask for much, right? Right?
