Book summary:
"He seethes with raw power the first time I see him—pure menace and rippling muscles in shackles. He’s dangerous. He’s wild. He’s the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen.

So I hide behind my prim glasses and my book like I always do, because I have secrets too. Then he shows up in the prison writing class I have to teach, and he blows me away with his honesty. He tells me secrets in his stories, and it’s getting harder to hide mine. I shiver when he gets too close, with only the cuffs and the bars and the guards holding him back. At night I can’t stop thinking about him in his cell.

But that’s the thing about an animal in a cage—you never know when he’ll bite. He might use you to escape. He might even pull you into a forest and hold a hand over your mouth so you can’t call for the cops. He might make you come so hard, you can’t think.

And you might crave him more than your next breath."

"Some people have a relationship that's sunshine and roses. Ours is darkness and vengeance."
What I initially thought Prisoner would be about?
  •        Forbidden romance, alpha male and bookworm, with just enough darkness to make things interesting.

What happened after I read it?

Prisoner is first novel in new series, Criminals and Captives, written by Skye Warren and Annika Martin. I haven't read Annika Martin novels before, but Skye Warren got under my skin with deliciously twisted Wanderlust, so I knew that Prisoner too would be a darker read. But, holy whip of Mistress Nora Sutherlin, I did not see that coming!
"They say there are two types of fear - the kind that has you running far, far away, and the kind that shakes you so deeply that you can't look away."
Easiest way to describe Prisoner is to imagine a lovechild that would get Gypsy Brothers series and Captive in the Dark if they could mate.
Stockholm syndrome, revenge, antiheroes and heartbreaking snippets into the past.

Writing was my favorite part - it is obvious that Skye Warren and Annika Martin are great team. This type of stories can quickly turn into the wrong direction and become too similar to fairy tales or focus entirely on erotic scenes. Although Prisoner has some less believable elements and can be described as modern, twisted and erotic fairy tale, but instead of the prince on white horse, there is a ruthless murderer - there is still something so captivating about this story, that you breathe it and live it while you're reading.

Antiheroes. All of those bad-ass guys that we should not like because essentially they do all the wrong things and don't fit into that perfect future our mothers want for us. The ultimate alpha males that, as feminists, we should despise. But, in the end, we still fall for them, no matter that they scare us. Grayson and other guys are them, but there is an explanation for their behavior and why are they doing everything (hat down for perfect character development).
"All I can do is go to him and put my hands on him. To speak to him in some twisted language of love that only we two speak, where we hurt each other just to soothe the wounds that follow."
Only thing that I wish was explained or developed better is Abigail's past. I understand that she had terrible childhood, but at times I felt as if I wasn't completely able to connect parts about her childhood memories with who she is as an adult. Other than that, she was a great character and I loved how she fought for Grayson even though that was not easy most of the time.

Who should read this? Everyone who enjoy reading unconventional love stories. Fans of darker reads. Everyone who read Skye Warren's Wanderlust and loved it.

Happy reading,
