Megan Hart is "best known for writing erotic fiction that sometimes makes you cry", and that is what keeps me coming back to her books. Beg for It didn't make me cry, nor did it make me sad as some of her other books did, but I still liked it. Truth be told, I didn't pick it up looking for a good cry, but to see if Megan Hart's books with BDSM elements work for me or not, because that seems to be the direction her newer stories are taking. The verdict is that yes, they could work. I liked the really sad, vanilla ones better, but this was all right, too.

Beg for It is the love story of Corinne and Reese who were a couple when they were younger. A happy couple in love who in the bedroom were Ma'am and boy. BDSM-wise their relationship was DS. No SM, for which I was glad. They were happily in love, but life took them in different directions. Corinne wanted a career right where they were living, and Reese wanted to get as far away as possible, which he did. She got her career, got married, had children, got divorced. He became a successful businessman. After many years he came back to his hometown, and in Corinne's life. The anger they had towards each other showed its ugly face, but so did the attraction that was still there. Old flames were reignited, and Corinne and Reese were once again Ma'am and boy, only older and wiser that hopefully wouldn't repeat their old mistakes.

Almost all the books by Megan Hart were the ones she wrote for Harlequin MIRA, and to me those were stories about women's lives with romance as one part of it. Beg for It was mostly focused on the romance. We learn about the other parts of Corinne's and Reese's lives, but romance is in the spotlight, and we get to read about both heir past and present relationship. I like it when stories alternate between past and present, and Megan Hart does it especially well.

Megan Hart's writing skills plus second-chance romance equals a winning combination.

ARC Review: 24/7 (The Subs Club, #4) by J.A. Rock

Summary

We started the Subs Club to make the kink community safer for subs. Except now the others are so busy chasing their happy endings, it’s like they’ve forgotten what Bill did to Hal and the fact that he got away with it. They used to think I was betraying Hal’s memory by hooking up with the owners of the club where he died. Now they don’t seem to care about any of it anymore.

Maybe I am sometimes angry with GK and Kel for giving Bill a second chance, but they’ve been mentoring me for a year now, and whatever else they’ve done, they make me feel incredibly safe. So I want to try something: I want to offer them my complete submission, 24/7. To serve the people who forgave Bill. That’s the way I want to hurt.

Except I’m starting to care about them in a way I never meant to—and I think they feel the same way. But after Hal, I don’t know if I want to be in love again. Because what I really need, more than anything, is to see Bill brought to justice. Even if I have to do it myself. Even if it means losing GK and Kel.

Saying goodbye to a beloved series is a sad, sad occasion, so for the time being I'm going to pretend my wish of more future installments came true. I refuse to say goodbye to Dave, Miles, Kamen, and Gould. I can't, and I won't.

24/7 is the fourth book in The Subs Club series, and so far I've felt my reviews don't do these stories justice no matter how much love I express for them. Gould's story won't be an exception. 

As expected Gould's book was a great one, just like the previous three were, and just like the previous books were perfect for the character they were about, 24/7 was perfect for Gould. As such it had quite a sad tone.

The effect Hal's death had on his friends had been present throughout the series. They created the Subs Club to help prevent what happened to Hal happen to anyone else, and in the previous stories the main characters shared their views on what happened and on Hal himself. From the get-go, it was apparent Gould, as Hal's ex-boyfriend, was the one most affected by Hal's passing. This book revealed just how much, and it was a lot. Hal was in Gould's thoughts more than not, and guilt over his death was a burden Gould carried with him all the time. Anger towards Bill, the dom Hal played with the night he died, was another burden. While Dave, Miles, and Kamen had found their significant others, and moved on, Gould was far from it. 

Gould's relationship with Kel and GK, the owners of the BDSM club where Hal died and who had let Bill come back, may have appeared as a betrayal of Hal's memory, but to Gould by submitting to the people who forgave Bill, it was a way to make himself hurt.

The Subs Club, Pain Slut, and Manties in a Twist were all M/M romance novels. 24/7 is a M/F/M story that I wouldn't really label as a romance. Kel and GK had been Gould's mentors for awhile; Kel was his Mistress, and GK was second-in-command. The more they spent time together, it became obvious Gould had deeper feelings for Kel even if he didn't want to. GK and Gould were friends. Well, friends who had sex with each other. Things were going well among them, so Gould mustered up the courage to ask for what he wanted, and that was to try 24/7 Master/slave relationship with them. That was good for Gould, but it also brought to light his deeper issues, which could have ended badly, underlining once again the importance of communication in BDSM.

Gould's kinks, humiliation and dehumanization, were not ones I'm most comfortable with, but it fit with the story, so no complaints will be coming from me.

As always, reading scenes with Dave, Miles, Kamen, and Gould was something I enjoyed very much. Nothing better than when these friends come together. Another reason why I like those parts is because I get an update on the established couples, and see how their relationships are progressing. It was in that theme the book and the series were wrapped-up. Everyone, Gould included, settled down, and were heading for a bright future. I was left all tears-eyed and unable to start a new book.

In the end all I can is that this series was a wonderful read. It's something special. I hope someday some of the side characters get their own books. It would be a shame not to revisit this world. In the meantime, I'm going to read as many J.A. Rock books as I can.

I've been trying to remember what it was about this book that once made me think I would like it and request it on NetGalley, but it's been so long I can't recall anything about it. All I know now is I made a mistake.

It's quite simple: this was not a book for me.

In terms of genre, I wouldn't know how to classify it. The Lost Coast had paranormal elements, murder mystery, erotica, a little romance. Unfortunately, none of them worked for me.

My only status update was What is happening here?! It's a question I kept asking throughout the book, whether it was because I genuinely had no idea what was happening or because I couldn't believe some things were actually happening. In the case of The Lost Coast that was not a good thing.

The main star and narrator of The Lost Coast is Millie, a woman who as a child survived a fire that left her with severe scars, knew nothing of her family, and had her heart broken by one Lukas Strand eight years ago when he disappeared from her life without a word. They meet again when going after a mysterious job offer and promise to find out more about her mother brings her to a place called The Lost Coast and to the home of her long lost lover, one he shares with his wife, and son who she was hired to take care of.

That's when she starts receiving anonymous messages about her childhood and her mother, which makes it the beginning of solving the mystery that is her origin.

During her stay at that estate, Millie will find herself in the middle of the Strand family drama, murders, attempted murders, and family traditions that will really have you wondering what in the world is happening there. Traditions that included incest, a fact I wish was included in the warning. I know the publisher uses that warning portion to describe all the fun things in a book, but I think incest should be in a real warning. It's something I'd like to avoid in books, and in this story it was particularly difficult to read. It's only described through conversations, but it was difficult nonetheless.

Those family traditions are strongly linked with what Lukas's and his wife's families are. And what they are is what made this book a paranormal one. I don't read much PNR, so I can't say if something like this was ever written about. I can only say I haven't ever found it in a book before. Not sure if I would want to repeat it because I found it a bit confusing. That it was connected to the incestuous relations didn't help.

So, Millie is finding out about her mother, father, and her family in general, she's dealing with some odd people at that estate, she's helping her ex's son get better, and keeping him out of danger, she's still attracted to her ex, Lukas, and that's not even half of it. Her life couldn't be any more complicated.

That brings me to her love-life complications, and the erotic and slightly romantic aspects of the novel. Lukas, who for me even at the end was still a mystery, was in a forbidden zone for Millie, but staying away was hard for both of them. Then another man entered her life and bedroom. I had no idea where it was headed from there, but the ending sounded like there was happiness in store for her in the future.

Overall, this was not a book I hated; just one that confused me a great deal, and ultimately didn't work for me. If any of the story parts I've mentioned seem appealing to you, then by all means, pick it up and see for yourself.

ARC Review: NAUGHTY WISHES Part I: BODY by Joey W. Hill

Samantha, Geoff, and Chris: three longtime friends and roommates about to finally take their relationship in a direction they all long for...

I've wanted to read about just that for awhile now, so I can't say I'm too happy this story is told through four novellas. Right when it got very interesting, I was at the end of the novella, and I was screaming internally: "Chris! Nooo! Come back! I need to read more!" For a minute there I regretted not waiting for all parts to be out before starting this serial like I did with Naughty Bits. Nevertheless, I did enjoy reading this part of Naughty Wishes. I'm not too pleased I have to wait months to get to the really good parts, but I'll wait as long as it takes.

In the fictional worlds Joey W. Hill has created, Samantha, Geoff, and Chris aren't entirely unknown characters. Those readers who have read the previous four-part serial, Naughty Bits, may remember them because they appeared there as Madison's customers. I certainly wasn't able to forget them because:
a) I was jealous of Sam, and
b) right at that time I learned Ms. Hill had their story in the works, and I've been looking forward to it ever since.

Naughty Wishes Part I is set only a week after that visit to Naughty Bits, so things weren't exactly as I imagined they would be. I thought Sam, Geoff, and Chris would be further along in their romantic relationship, but I can see now this novella serial will be about them finally giving into what they all three want, and I can't wait to see how they'll fit into their new roles. The dynamic they'll have is more-or-less clear, and Sam knew it, too. That's why she was set out to conquer Geoff first. 

As I said, it was the week after the trio visited the lingerie shop, but things weren't going as well or as fast as Samantha would've liked. She had no doubts about where their relationship should go, but Geoff and Chris needed to be pushed a little. Her first step was showing Geoff, who was the alpha in their group, her true desires. She needed him on board before attempting anything with Chris. And Geoff was more than willing to play. Yay for everyone!

Now, Geoff was willing to play, and was good at it, but he was still a dominant learning the ropes. Sam had a co-worker providing her with the much needed guidance in the world of BDSM. Geoff found himself learning a thing or two from Logan, and Troy. I appreciate that the author made them and Madison a part of this story, because I do so love finding the same characters in different books.

As for Sam and Geoff, they showed the signs of that deep connection Joey W. Hill's characters I've come to know for, and why I keep coming back to her books, and why I'm such a fan of her work. I was a bit disappointed Chris didn't make an appearance until the very end, but it's all the more reason to look forward to the next chapters and see at last the three of them making their relationship work, and I know they will make it work. How they'll do it, that remains to be seen. In 21 days.

Book eight. The end. This is the moment I've been both dreading and looking forward to for a long time. I hate having to say goodbye to another series this year, especially one with so many characters who've become dear to me over the few years I've been reading about them, but it's time. I'll miss the series, I'll miss the Sinners, I already miss Kingsley, but it's time to let them put the past behind and enjoy their happy endings. That's what The White Years have been about. Each book showed us the main characters living happily, giving us info on what's new in their lives, and what's to come, and in between we had a few hundred pages of confessions about times long gone. This, the last confession was Nora's.


The Queen was another Nora's story, and this time it really was Nora's story. Not Eleanor's, or Elle's. Nora's. It was the last important untold part of the Sinners history: how Eleanor Schreiber became Nora Sutherlin, the erotica writer and the famous Dominatrix we met a long time ago in the book that started it all, The Siren.


Both in the present and the past The Queen picked up right where The Virgin left off: in their present time the big wedding was happening, and Nora was delighted; in the past she was sitting in Kingsley's office, and her life was about to change forever. When you like a series as much as I like The Original Sinners, in the anticipation of a new book, you can't help but imagine what will happen in it based on the bits and pieces you know about it. Sometimes your imagination goes overboard, so when you actually read the story, you're surprised by how simple it all was. That's sort of what happened to me here. It's not a bad thing. Just different. I liked the addition of Thorny and Milady, one there to help and the other to hinder Nora's future as a Dominatrix, though I did think they would be the cause of bigger drama.


The Queen gave us insight into how Eleanor/Elle became Nora, how she trained to be a dominant, then later in the book how her life was going working for Kingsley, but if I had to pick one aspect of the story that stood out to me, it would the complicated relationship between Nora and Søren, and how hard it was for her to not come back to him. Having the freedom to do anything and anyone felt amazing to Nora, but there was always Søren tempting her to go back in his cage. Always Søren. Even I felt emotionally exhausted. I used to think this would be a Nora book, but given all the scenes with her and Søren, especially the end, I'm calling this a Nora & Søren book.


As I mentioned at the beginning, I've spent some time thinking about what I might read in The Queen. I thought it would be cool to have it end at the point where The Siren started. That didn't happen, but it was close enough. The cause of Søren's unusual nervousness, this I nailed. But of course, a few parts I could never have guessed. And the end, the very end, ah, it was so happy it brought tears to my eyes.


In the end, just a few thoughts about The Original Sinners. I've enjoyed reading each and every part of the series, be it a full-length novel, novella or a short story. However, I do have to admit that while I've loved reading the tales from the Sinners' past, both unknown, and the ones we heard about before, I loved The Red Years more. In The White Years I missed having those different POVs (The King excluded; Kingsley's POV only was a dream come true!), when one or more of them were of the characters outside that main group, and learning new information about the Sinners through the eyes of people who were, like me, only getting to know them. It was a magical time, getting to know Nora, Søren, Griffin, Michael, Zach, and others and learning about all the ties that bind them. The best was, of course, getting to know Kingsley. That man, I will miss reading about him so much...

I don't know what else to say at the moment, except if you haven't already, pick up The Siren, and as Goodreads says: "Meet your next favorite book."

ARC Review: DEAD RINGER by Heidi Belleau & Sam Schooler

Summary:

Dead Ringer is one of those books I wanted to hug after finishing it; hug the book, its main characters, and the authors for writing it. And to the people responsible for this cover, I'd like to say: Well done! It is not only an awesome cover, but it's also perfect for the story. It was that cover that first caught my eye, and made me curious about the book, but what made me want to read it was that the main character was an escort. I remembered wanting to read as many escort books as I could at the beginning of this year. What ever happened to that plan of mine, I have no idea, but this was a great opportunity to put it back in action. Mentions of classic Hollywood didn't hurt either. (This book actually made me want to watch a bunch of old movies.) Needless to say, I started reading Dead Ringer with high hopes, and I'm happy to report none of them were crushed. The more I read about Brandon and Percy, the more I wanted to read about them. The book has quite a few pages, but never did I feel bored by the story. I got to the end and wished there was more, but content to leave Brandon and Percy at that point, seeing how far they'd come. 



Before I get all teary-eyed again over the ending, I should go back to the beginning of the story, and Brandon's troubles. Brandon Ringer hadn't had an easy life. He was only nineteen, and because his parents found having a gay son unacceptable, he had been living on his own the best way he could for years. The only person in his family who'd always been on his side had been his grandmother Dahlia, who had recently passed away, leaving her Hollywood mansion to Brandon. Owning such a mansion didn't come cheap, but he was determined to keep Dahlia's house and her memories. He started working as a cam model, which led him to another job at Hollywood Doubles, an escort service with employees who look like celebrities. Being a spitting image of his grandfather, James Ringer, an old Hollywood legend, Brandon was perfect for the job.  


Working as his grandfather's double wasn't an ideal situation for Brandon. All his life he was reminded of how much he resembled him, and not for good things. Plus, he grew up hearing gossip about James's numerous affairs, for which he was still angry on Dahlia's behalf. It goes without saying he was less than enthusiastic about playing the role of the man he despised, which showed quite clearly in the clients' reviews. 
Everything changed after meeting Percy. 



Percy, being chronically ill, spent all his time isolated in his part of his parents' huge house. His only company was his creepy caregiver, while his parents weren't exactly interested in his life, other than to take him to parties to show he wasn't too sick, and to show themselves in the best possible light as caring parents. At one of those parties, he met Kovie, a girl who soon became his friend and gave him the idea to do something rebellious. Percy being a James Ringer fanboy, saw hiring Brandon or "Jim Ringer" as  an excellent plan to both rebel and spend time with another Ringer fan. The problem was Jim turned out to be a disappointment because other than the way he looked, Jim was nothing like James. On top of that he didn't seem to know anything about him.


After letting Percy down, and his other clients, Brandon decided to change his attitude, and become better at his job. This was one of my favorite parts of the book. Seeing Brandon trying hard to do his job well, then being so happy after receiving positive reviews from the same clients who weren't so pleased before, it was wonderful. Ah, it still makes me smile. Throughout the story it was easy to feel whatever the main characters felt, and Brandon's content for a job well done was contagious. More importantly, this was Brandon's first step in getting to know his grandfather. As the story progressed he found out more and more about him, making him realize not all was as it seemed, and that James Ringer wasn't the devil he was led to believe. 
Percy played an important role in that.


Watching James Ringer movies wasn't all Brandon & Percy did during their meetings. After all, Brandon worked for an escort service. But that wasn't all, either. These two young men discovered how much they liked each other's company, how much they liked each other, and how much they wanted to be together off the clock. However, with Percy's medical condition and his quality of life depending on medicines controlled by his creepy caregiver and parents, and with Brandon's secrets, that wasn't easy to achieve. How they managed or did they manage, you'll have to find out for yourselves. I've said enough. I, for one, enjoyed every part of their journey, even the ones that made my heart hurt. In the end, it was all worth it.


Overall, with an interesting  plot, subplots, lovable main characters, quite a few side characters who won my sympathies (there were a few exceptions, of course), and that old Hollywood feel, in my book, Dead Ringer was an absolute winner.
