Archangel's Shadows (Guild Hunter, #7) by Nalini Singh

Buy The Book:

Author's Page:

Genre:
Urban Fantasy/ Paranormal Romance

Summary on Goodreads:

Return to New York Times bestselling author Nalini Singh’s sensual and painfully beautiful Guild Hunter world in her new novel of sacrifice, loyalty, and the choices of love that can shatter the heart.

In the wake of a brutal war, the archangel Raphael and his hunter consort, Elena, are dealing with the treacherously shifting tides of archangelic politics and the people of a battered but not broken city. The last thing their city needs is more death, especially a death that bears the eerie signature of an insane enemy archangel who cannot— should not—be walking the streets.

This hunt must be undertaken with stealth and without alerting their people. It must be handled by those who can become shadows themselves…

Ash is a gifted tracker and a woman cursed with the ability to sense the secrets of anyone she touches. But there’s one man she knows all too well without a single instant of skin contact: Janvier, the dangerously sexy Cajun vampire who has fascinated and infuriated her for years. Now, as they track down a merciless killer, their cat-and-mouse game of flirtation and provocation has turned into a profound one of the heart. And this time, it is Ash’s secret, dark and terrible, that threatens to destroy them both.

RATING:

***REVIEW***

"She was his Achilles' heel, his personal, luminous madness."

I'm happy to say that Guild Hunter series by Nalini Singh continue to amaze me and hold one of the top spots on my list of favorite urban fantasy series. This was one of my highly expected 2014 releases and once again it didn't disappoint, but end up being one of my favorite books of 2014 as always.

The story continues after the epic finale of the previous book. The city is still recovering from the shattering war against Lijuan and her army and in the midst of it all we are witnessing the slow-building romance between Ashwini, one of the Guild hunters, and Janvier, one of Raphael's vampires. I admit that Ashwini's and Janvier's story wasn't my first choice when deciding whose story I would like to read next after I had finished Archangel's Shadows (Guild Hunter, #6). I hoped more for Illium's, Venom's or even Nassir's story, but I don't have any regrets now, because Nalini Singh has managed yet again to deliver a captivating, thrilling, passionate and deeply emotional read.

Both of the MCs were the type of characters I love and prefer reading about. Ashwini was one of those smart, fierce and compassionate women with character and Janvier was a bad-ass, sensual, and provocative vampire, but also a true charmer who made me swoon a couple of times and that's big, because I really don't swoon easily, lol. While most of the story was focused on the slow building of their romance and the crime case they were handling, we also get a sneak-a-peek in the lives of other amazing characters (Elena, Raphael, Bluebell, Sparkle, Nassir, Dmitri etc.) There was also some introduction to the new characters we met for the first time in the previous book- The Legion. I loved how these angel soldiers are portrayed and can't wait to find out more about them and the role they'll play in the future installations.

"A fetid breath on the back of the neck.
A chill of bones. A cold whisper in the darkness.
There are those things that should not exist,
should not walk, should not breathe, should not be named.
There are those nightmares that, once given form,
can never be put back into the dreamscape."

The in-depth world building of this fantasy world is only getting better and better and the writing style of this author is simply amazing. My fingers were hurting from so much highlighting. Reading Nalini Singh's book is like listening to a beautiful melody. The only thing which kept me from rating it with 5 stars is that "the issue" which kind of prevent Ashwini & Janvier from being together through the most of the book in the end solved in the most convenient way which made me wondering why it had been a issue at all . That part could have been handled in my opinion a bit differently. That's why 4.5 stars. Other than that the book was perfect. I highly recommend this series to every urban fantasy fan. What are you waiting for- this is a must read!

"She gave him her soul, took his, and it was as it had always been meant to be."

Review: RETURN ON INVESTMENT by Aleksandr Voinov

Book summary:

Martin David, an eager but inexperienced financial analyst, is the newest member of the investment team at Skeiron Capital Partners in London. His boss is an avowed financial genius, but he’s also overbearing and intense. Despite his erratic behaviour, Martin can’t help being drawn to him both professionally and personally.

Too bad his boss doesn’t seem to feel the same. In a firm where pedigree and connections mean far more than Martin’s newly-minted business degree, Martin feels desperately inadequate—at least until he meets the enigmatic investment manager Alec Berger, who promises to help Martin establish himself in the financial community. Martin is so charmed by Alec’s sophistication and wit that he gives him data that should have stayed confidential.

Then the financial crisis hits. Banks burn, companies teeter on the brink, and Skeiron’s survival is at stake. Martin is pushed into the middle of the fight for Skeiron—against both the tanking economy and a ruthless enemy who’s stepped out of the shadows to collect the spoils.

Return on Investment is the new gay financial thriller from EPIC Award winner and Lambda Award finalist Aleksandr Voinov.

 My rating:  ✮✮✮✮

My review:

Let's start with the cover. While the model on it certainly would attract my attention, I think the title Return on Investment, and the tagline: September 2008, and the banks are dying... would probably have made me decide that this really wasn't the type of book for me. Honestly, if you had asked me even what return on investment was, I'd have just stared at you blankly. However, as far as I'm concerned the best recommendation a book can possibly have is that it's written by Aleksandr Voinov. I have come to the point where I don't care what the book is about, which genre it is, what the title or the cover is--if he wrote it, I'm there! Even if the book is about the financial meltdown of 2008.

My favorite show of all times is Seinfeld, and I swear there is a valid reason I'm mentioning this here (other than I really love talking about Seinfeld). That show about nothing, in my humble opinion, with each new season only got better. I have the same feelings for this book: with each chapter the story got better, and the more I read the more I wanted to read it, so I ended up terribly disappointed when I reached the end. That last part was my favourite one, and I wanted it to last much longer than it did. I may or may not have had a little meltdown of my own right there.

However, before I got all sucked in Martin's life, I admit, I had some trouble getting into the story. I actually put this book on-hold for a little while. I guess all those warnings about the content hadn't sunk in yet, even if I had thought otherwise. And Martin, the main character, was behaving rather recklessly, which made me worried about him, and how his life would be at the end, so a break was what I needed. And it did me good. When I resumed reading, it was with adjusted expectations, and as I said, the story only got better.

The story got better while the economy got worse. Admittedly, I know very little about the financial world, and I honestly don't want to know; it's something I have zero interest in. But trust Aleksandr Voinov to get me at least a little intrigued to see how it works. I didn't understand everything, and trying to understand it did slow my reading at times, but it worked out fine. What I liked about this aspect of the book is seeing how the turmoil affected a specific company and its employees. The news covered that storm, but seeing it through the eyes of a character who was in the middle of it made it all more real.

Now for my favourite part: the characters, and their interactions. If there's one thing I can count on finding in this author's books, it's characters that will become very dear to me, so much so that I'll wish they were real so we could become friends. Needless to say, I found them in Return on Investment, too. Martin took a little while to win me over though, but once he did, that was it--I only grew to like him more and more with each read page. I was thrilled that everything that happened to him and around him served to make him better, smarter, wiser. Seeing him become that man he was at the end of the book was an incredible journey. The world could use a man like Martin David.

Francis, too, slowly grew on me. The man was an enigma, and as Francis, the man, revealed himself, the more his character appealed to me. I'm not gonna lie, like Martin, I developed a crush on him. Therefore, any new book with him in it is most welcome.

The romantic relationship between Martin and Francis had an odd development, but given the circumstances I do think it went well. I was happy with how they were in the end. Also, the author's note at the end about where these characters were heading was much appreciated.

Another character that left a good impression is Josh. There wasn't much of him in the book, but he was a friend who would step up when needed, and I liked what his presence did for Martin.

Even Syed I ended up liking. Who knew?

But in the midst of all those loveable characters, there was him: Alec Berger, the devil in disguise. Just thinking about him makes my skin crawl. It was Martin's involvement with Alec Berger that made me that break in reading; his character hadn't sit well with me, and even though Martin hadn't realized it at the time, his behaviour had been that of an evil, despicable predator. I hope he gets what he deserves. But he did show how some office/company politics work, so that's something, I guess.

And, hey, I finally know what return on investment is. :)

My thoughts in the end are same as always after finishing an Aleksandr Voinov book: I want more!

XOXO

The Mistress (The Original Sinners, #4) by Tiffany Reisz

Buy The Book:

Author's Page:

Genre:
Dark Contemporary Romance/ Bdsm

Summary on Goodreads:

The final book in The Original Sinners Series - The Red Years.

There's punishment-and then there's vengeance.

Nora Sutherlin is being held, bound and naked. Under different circumstances, she would enjoy the situation immensely, but her captor isn't interested in play. Or pity.

As the reality of her impending peril unfolds, Nora becomes Scheherazade, buying each hour of her life with stories-sensual tales of Søren, Kingsley and Wesley, each of whom has tempted and tested and tortured her in his own way. This, Nora realizes, is her life: nothing so simple, so vanilla, as a mere love triangle for her. It's a knot in a silken cord, a tangled mass of longings of the body and the heart and the mind. And it may unravel at any moment.

But in Nora's world, no one is ever truly powerless-a cadre of her friends, protectors and lovers stands ready to do anything to save her, even when the only certainty seems to be sacrifice and heartbreak....

RATING:

***REVIEW***

“Sometimes the only way to show someone you love them is to let them go.”

This book was definitely nothing as I expected it to be, but that was also the case with the first three books in the series and I ended up loving them. I love the element of surprise, but whereas it was a good thing before, this time I’m not so sure. In the end- it left me with huge, mixed feelings.

Just everything about it, from the intriguing beginning til' the confusing and unexpected ending, to me felt odd. The development of the plot, the illogical behavior of some characters…just everything. Like my friend Glass said- the book unfortunately seemed to lack everything that I loved about the previous books. From time to time it just felt as if it even doesn’t belong in this series at all, but let me start first with the things that I actually liked:

1. Kingsley

"Mon Dieu, the entire vanilla world has taken over my house."

Still my favorite character of them all. I’m happy as long as he’s happy. Period :).

2. Nora

“Oh, yes, poor little me. Had to have sex with the two most beautiful men on the planet in the same night. It was torture by orgasm. All, I don’t know, five or six of them.”

Nora is finally back to her old Domina/ whose-your-bitch self *fist-pump* and I hope we never lose her again to her boring sub self. The slap that she delivered to that *special someone* was epic!!!

The things that I didn’t like:

1. Some parts of the book were cheesy  and melodramatic in a soupish kind of way and sorry, but anyone who says different is delusional.

2. Soren- this time I didn’t like him for totally different reasons, because this time he actually acted totally out of his character, which I again didn’t like. He did some things which to me seemed rather unbelievable that his type of character would ever do after everything that he’s been through. I guess me & Soren will never be bffs. The only thing in common is our love for Kingsley and that's it.

3. Grace- I just couldn’t connect to her character at all and the parts of the book with her POV were kind of boring. I don't understand how was she relevant to the story or why the author had to make her relevant to the story and then, don't let me forget about her strange behavior towards Nora. I don't think that any sane woman would behave like that towards the woman with whom *spoiler*.

4. Wesley- Another character whose behavior seemed odd & unbelievable after everything that had happened.

I know that many Tiffany Reisz fans will want to flog me after I say this, but to tell you the truth, after the first three books, especially after The Prince which was epic and my favorite in the series, as far as the plot is concerned, this installation was rather average, but I think that Tiffany Reisz being one of the most talented and powerful writers I’ve read lately is more than capable to surprise us (me) all over again. 3 solid, I-had-bigger-expectations-from-you stars.

“Will these books be comedies or tragedies?”

“Both. Just like life.”
