Summary on Goodreads:

When homicide detective Dexter J. Daley’s testimony helps send his partner away for murder, the consequences—and the media frenzy—aren’t far behind. He soon finds himself sans boyfriend, sans friends, and, after an unpleasant encounter in a parking garage after the trial, he’s lucky he doesn’t find himself sans teeth. Dex fears he’ll get transferred from the Human Police Force’s Sixth Precinct, or worse, get dismissed. Instead, his adoptive father—a sergeant at the Therian-Human Intelligence Recon Defense Squadron otherwise known as the THIRDS—pulls a few strings, and Dex gets recruited as a Defense Agent.

Dex is determined to get his life back on track and eager to get started in his new job. But his first meeting with Team Leader Sloane Brodie, who also happens to be his new jaguar Therian partner, turns disastrous. When the team is called to investigate the murders of three HumaniTherian activists, it soon becomes clear to Dex that getting his partner and the rest of the tightknit team to accept him will be a lot harder than catching the killer—and every bit as dangerous.

Dex's earpiece flashed blue and Sloane
watched in amusement as Dex tapped it.

Please leave the message after the snarl."

Hi everyone! Come & meet one of my new favorite mm seriesTherian-Human Intelligence Recon Defense Squadron a.k.a The THIRDS by Charlie Cochet. I didn't read anything by this author until this book, but I've heard only good things and now I can definitely confirm that she excels at her job when it comes to this series. I'm so hooked!

                        Action-packed,  super-funny with a great mm romance.
BIG BONUS- a paranormal mm romance with shifters/ military men *_*!

Am I in heaven? - my "subtle" reaction while reading. The only thing that would have made it better for me would be if it was a GFY romance, but even without that feature, I LOVED THIS BOOK so much!

The biggest reason for that, aside the genre, is the main character of this book=> the homicide detective Dexter J. Daley "Dex".  This guy managed to become one of my favorite characters ever in just a few pages- that says it all. Cocky, hot, hilarious, mischievous, witty, incorrigible dirty-talker & geek who is a little bit obsessed with the music of 80es. He almost made me pee my panties a couple of billion times. I barely made it, I swear. You just have to meet this guy to get what I'm saying. It's simply impossible not to love him.

Here's a little bit of his of his awesomeness:

"You...you're cool with that?"
"Yeah." Dex shrugged and smiled at him,
leaning with a wink. "I mean, I know
this is hard to resist." He swept a hand over his chest.
Sloane pressed his lips together in an obvious attempt
not to laugh, but in the end he gave in. "You're such an ass."
"What?" Dex asked innocently. "It's dangerous to have this much game."

"Hey, Dex." Dex shifted his gaze to Ash,
his smile pleasant. "Simba."
Ash looked unimpressed. "I should pull the plug.
Put you out of your misery."
Dex: "You don't need to pull the plug for that,
just cover your face..."

"I can get you a framed painting if you like. Or you could suck it."

Then we have his almost as awesome love interest Sloane Brodie, the jaguar shifter & the bad-ass team leader of the THIRDS, an organisation which deals with criminal among shifters. Sloane is this mysterious, tough, grumpy & way too hot bad-ass Thirds soldier who gets partnered with Dex after the death of his former partner and you can already guess that he isn't happy about that at all. Well, at least at the beginning. Because, let's be honest, who could manage to resist the charm of Dex Daley for real? No one. That's indisputable.

The chemistry between these two was smoking, but they both have issues and a rough past which keeps coming between them, plus there's this stupid rule of the Thirds organisation that says: thou shalt not get involved with your partners. For real?  Yup, stupid, stupid rule. But it's no fun if you don't break a couple of rules in the way, is it ;)?

The paranormal part of the story was action-packed & interesting. There's a serial killer in the shifter world and Thirds get called to solve the case. That's all I'm gonna say about the story. Aside MCs Dex & Sloane there is also a lot of other awesome secondary characters (Cael, Calvin, Maddock, Rosa etc.) who made the book that much better. Just look at this awesome THIRDS casting made by the author herself *_*:

I say *hell yeah*  to every casting, especially Sloane's- Joe Mangaiello *le sigh*, Ash's & Cael's, but I'm still undecided about Chris Pine as Dex. No one good enough comes to my mind who would be suitable enough to play that adorable guy.

Either way, I highly recommend this new mm series to every mm lover out there! Give it a chance, you won't regret it, I promise. I didn't even manage to finish the 1st book without ordering the second one. Review follows.

Blood & Thunder (THIRDS, #2) by Charlie Cochet

Summary on Goodreads:

When a series of bombs go off in a Therian youth center, injuring members of THIRDS Team Destructive Delta, and causing a rift between agents Dexter J. Daley and Sloane Brodie, peace seems unattainable. Especially when a new and frightening group, the Order of Adrasteia, appears to always be a step ahead. With panic and intolerance spreading and streets becoming littered with the Order’s propaganda, hostility between Humans and Therians grows daily. Dex and Sloane, along with the rest of the team, are determined to take down the Order and restore peace, not to mention settle a personal score. But the deeper the team investigates the bombings, the more they believe there’s a more sinister motive than a desire to shed blood and spread chaos.

Discovering the frightful truth behind the Order’s intent forces Sloane to confront secrets from a past he thought he’d left behind for good, a past that could not only destroy him and his career, but also the reputation of the organization that made him all he is today. Now more than ever, Dex and Sloane need each other, and, along with trust, the strength of their bond will mean the difference between justice and all-out war.

RATING:

***REVIEW***

Charlie Cochet, thank you for writing this awesome new mm series and creating one of my favorite characters ever- Dexter J. Daley "Dex" a.k.a Rookie. I thought I loved the 1st book, but in that case I adored this one. Yup, it was that good! This is the new mm series that kept me awake for 3 days in a row. I barely slept at all, but I don't regret it.

The story picks up after the ending of the 1st book. The things I loved the most about this book, Dex's awesomeness aside, is the slow build-up relationship between him & Sloane and the building friendship between him & the rest of his team. Sloane & Dex are getting closer and closer, even though Sloane insist they keep it a secret and with no strings attached, but how to keep it that way when Dex keeps getting under his skin more and more everyday?

They were just so cute together, but I admit that from time to time I wanted to kick Sloane's frustrating ass because of his insecurities and doubts, but in the end I forgave him, because it was understandable that he would feel like that after everything he's been through. Dex was, of course, his usual awesome-self. Oh, I really love that guy. I was laughing like crazy at his hilarious jokes and snide remarks.

Here's another sneak-a-peek at his awesomeness:

I really want to shoot him. Next time we're at the firing range,
if I promise you a blowjob, can I shoot him? Just a nick. He'll barely feel it.

"I'm not going to look at your ass, Daley. Not if you were the last fuckable guy on this planet."
Dex grinned widely: "So you're saying I'm fuckable?"

"Love dart?"
"No."
"Portable pocket rocket?"
Sloane smiled. "Asolutely." The smile vanished. " Not."
"How about moisture missile? Peacemaker? Heat seeking missile?" (Dex about possible names for Sloane's lover parts *wink*)

Yup, I definitely love this guy :).

Great news is that the author plans to write at least 6 books of this series as far as I've seen on Goodreads with the next book coming out in November 2014. The first four will be focused on Dex & Sloane as the main couple and the last two will be focused on another couple. Whom? Unfortunately, it's still unknown, but I give my vote to Cael & Ash <3. Oh, please Charlie, pretty please *puppie dog eyes.* I know Ash declares himself as straight, but he is acting not so staright when he's around Cael, don't you think? Oh my, it could be an epic GFY mm romance *_*! Be still my inner mm fangirl.

The paranormal part of the story was interesting and action-packed as usual. We get to find out more about Therian (shifter) society and the connection between Therians and their human partners in this book. I'm eagerly waiting for November 2014 to see what more the author has in store for us. This series definitely has a place on my top 5 reads of the summer. Highly recommend it to every mm fan. Read it!

My review:

This is a review for the first three stories, since those are the ones I've read so far.

This anthology is a lot of firsts for me: it's the first anthology I'm reading, with the exception of Joey W. Hill, the first time I'm reading anything by these authors, and Joey's novella is my first adult vampire story.

description

I admit, it was this tale that made me click on this book in the first place. I'm a huge fan of all the author's books I've read so far, and even though I haven't read anything from her Vampire Queen series, I couldn't resist. Starting a series from the tenth book -- that's not at all weird. At the beginning it did say that I would probably enjoy the story more if I had read the previous books and was familiar with the VQ world, but quite frankly I'm not sure that's possible, because I loved it! It gave enough information about the vampire world, and about the vampire-servant dynamic that exists in that world, so I didn't feel lost in those parts at all, even about some characters from the previous books there was enough not to consider them strangers when they appeared in this one. I did skip a big part of the series to get here, but it didn't feel like that. It did make me eager to go back to book one and read the whole series, but that's a good thing.

The Scientific Method was an emotional read for me. Without any exaggeration: Debra & Brian's story made me sob. At the beginning, Debra was in such a fragile emotional state, I just wanted to hug her, and beat Brian up for causing it. I still do, actually. For a genius scientist, he was such a blind idiot. Anyway, as I was saying, Debra was in a bad place. She knew what her place as a servant was, but she knew her relationship with Brian could be so much more, the idea of which he shot down, leaving a void inside her.

As a human who entered the vampire world as a third mark servant, Debra had to leave her whole life and people from it behind, including her family. When she learned that a dear family member was dying, it made everything even worse. The worst of it was that Brian, her Master, who had the ability to enter her mind and see what she was thinking and feeling, almost never did that, so he was completely oblivious to all this. The bastard.

However, he started to open his eyes, and change his ways. He finally started to behave the way he should have from the very beginning.

As always, there were some scorching hot scenes, not heavy on SM, but the Master/slave relationship between Brian and Debra is pretty serious. This may not be the most enjoyable read for those who like to read about really light BDSM. I'm not one of them, so for me, this was another winner from Ms. Hill.

In the end, I was very happy for Debra, but I'd still like to give Brian a piece of my mind.

description                    description

Tales 2 & 3, Three Secrets and His Secret, weren't as good for me as the first one. The Scientific Method was quite long, and I love the author's books, so that's no surprise. Three Secrets and His Secret weren't nearly as long, so connecting with the characters was a harder task. Debra & Brian got a lot of pages, so I was able to completely immerse myself in their story. With Nicole & Abel, and Sarah & Ben, not so much. Maybe if their stories weren't about a crucial part in their romances, it wouldn't have bothered me, but as it is, when I'm reading stories this short I prefer the relationship between characters to be light, new. If not, I'd like many more pages about it. That said, I did like His Secret. I didn't find his secret to be that dark, but I am used to heavier forms of BDSM. His thing was cute, in my opinion. I did like how the characters connected on that field, how they clicked. I wish there was more of Ben and his suits, but what can you do.

While I didn't feel like I missed something important from Debra & Brian's history, I did feel like there was something missing in Three Secrets. This is book #3 in Three series, so maybe it would have been better if I had read the previous two. I don't know. It had a nice menage scene, but given who the participants were to each other, I honestly couldn't enjoy it.

What I didn't like from both of these stories was that the characters keeping secrets regarding their sexual preferences were offering to try and suppress them if their partners weren't into it. I'm sorry, but I find this unacceptable. It not like quitting a habit, it's denying a part of who they are, so, no, I do not want to read about that.

Current score:
- The Scientific Method: ★★★★½
- Three Secrets: ★★
- His Secret: ★★★

My review:

Reading a book for the second time for me usually means I loved it so much the first time I wanted to read it again more slowly and savor every page. Other times it is to get reacquainted with a book from a series I wish to continue. This was a combination of the two. I enjoyed this book the first time, maybe not enough to want to read it multiple times, but enough not to mind reading it again. So when I decided to go back to this series and this time read it in order, picking up Natural Law for the second time was an easy decision.

After the exotic setting of Holding the Cards with a doctor, artist, and gallery owner as main characters, this was a big change. The romance between Mac and Violet included a multiple murder investigation, few insane Doms, one asshole of a sub, and some very dangerous situations.

A while back I realized crime was really not a genre for me. It's not because I don't like reading it, but because of all the crime books I've read I could barely name a few of them with a plot I remember or who the murderer/criminal was in them. That is why I gave up on reading crime books. When I'm just going to end up forgetting them completely, I didn't see the point in reading them at all. Surprise, surprise, while I remembered the majority of what happened between Mac and Violet in the romance department, all the parts concerning the case Mac was investigating was once again new for me. I had forgotten everything, so once again the book gave me a few scares.

Besides that, there was a significant difference in the characters. Josh was so cute, and he was an artist, and every time I think of him, I wish for my own Josh. On the other hand, I do not wish for my own Mac. He can cook, but still... Like Josh, Mac is a submissive, but he is also an alpha male, possessive, and a rather difficult sub. I have utmost respect for Violet for being a Mistress that can handle Mac. Yes, Josh would be who I'd pick, but reading about Violet breaking through Mac's thick walls was great. A strong and very determined woman she is. She got Mac to finally accept her as his Mistress. The man who submitted to many Mistresses, but never truly surrendered, finally did. Not an easy feat. And luckily for me, this took up the much larger part of the book. When I started it for the first time, I thought it would be more focused on finding the murderer, but I was happy with how it turned out.

Another thing that I had completely forgotten were the side characters that appeared. I suppose the first time I had no idea some of them were important because there would be books about them later or that some were mentioned before. Serves me right for not paying more attention.

Overall, though this may not have been one of my favorites, it's still a book I loved reading both times. After all, it is a book written by an amazing writer.

XOXO

Science-Fiction- Dystopia/ MM Romance

Summary on Goodreads:

They're always happy.

Rory James has worked hard all his life to become a citizen of the idyllic city-state of Beulah. Like every other kid born in the neighboring country of Tophet, he’s heard the stories: No crime or pollution. A house and food for everyone. It’s perfect, and Rory is finally getting a piece of it.

So is Tate Patterson. He’s from Tophet, too, but he’s not a legal immigrant; he snuck in as a thief. A city without crime seems like an easy score, until he crashes into Rory during a getaway and is arrested for assaulting a citizen. Instead of jail, Tate is enrolled in Beulah’s Rehabilitation through Restitution program. By living with and serving his victim for seven years, Tate will learn the human face of his crimes.

If it seems too good to be true, that’s because it is. Tate is fitted with a behavior-modifying chip that leaves him unable to disobey orders—any orders, no matter how dehumanizing. Worse, the chip prevents him from telling Rory, the one man in all of Beulah who might care about him, the truth: in a country without prisons, Tate is locked inside his own mind.

***MY REVIEW***

"They are always happy."

Psst, psst, where can I get me some of those chips, huh??? Kidding ;).
This was again one of those reads I picked because of the pretty & "innocent" cover and because it is a mm read and I was in need of one of those after a couple of truly disappointing m/f reads in a row. So, imagine my surprise when I started reading and discovered that the story is faaar from innocent.

As one of my friends pointed out :)- I should have been more focused on that part from the blurb which clearly states "any orders, no matter how dehumanizing", to get some idea what the story will be like, but she should know by now that my brain usually doesn't think so deep when it comes to books, lol. Sad, but true. Either way, even if I had some idea about the plot of the story it probably wouldn't have stopped me from reading it, because it's well known that I do enjoy a good dark read, and this turned out to be pretty good & pretty dark too.

Imagine a world where criminals don't get sentenced to prison or other regular punishments, but they get a behavior-modifying chip installed in their neck and become servants to the people they offended. The chip makes them obey any type of order and their sole goal is to serve and please their "masters". Only then can they be truly happy and the side-effect  in case they fail to do that is that they endure severe pain. That type of society is the society of Beulah where the MCs Rory & Tate meet for the first time.

Beulah  seems as an idyllic place for them both to start their life, better from the one they had before, but...What if that type of chip ever came to the wrong hands? Considering the corruption of laws and its society, is it really possible to create a perfect society with no criminal?  Lies, secrets, corruption, a big fraud. Nothing and no one is as it seems, but they are always happy, or are they really? Think something in style of that creepy movie Stepford Wives (2004), that type of behavior, only much, much worse. That's all I'm going to say.

Interesting, dark, twisted, gripping & way-too-hot.

I was hooked from the very beginning, but you should have in mind that this book is not for everyone, only for my fellow fans of dark reads who like mm romance too. I liked the story and its characters very much. It was refreshing and unpredictable. The only thing I would preferred is as far as the romance is concerned that we saw Rory &  Tate spending more quality time together and the ending also left me wanting for more. Another big plus, at least for me was that it is a GFY type of mm romance.

This is my first read by these two authors, but it won't be the last. Good job!

"Is it really this easy to be happy?"

XOXO

My review:

“You are going to crack someday, aren’t you, Lieutenant?”

While I always try not to expect much from books, after the great introduction this series had, with this one I couldn't help it. Otherwise Alone was a very promising beginning. I couldn't not expect good things from Otherwise Occupied, and it did not disappoint. In fact, it exceeded my expectations.

After the first book I had some questions and ideas of how the story would go. I expected one hell of a ride, and I got it. Evan was back on his job as a hit man for the Chicago's mob boss, and trying to get into his good graces. Assassin is not on my list of favorite professions, and I have to admit there were a few scenes that made me queasy, mostly because even though Evan is a sniper, he had a few up close and personal hits, but other than that, I liked reading about how Evan fit in the organization. Dealing with the competition who wanted Evan out of the picture, carrying out orders from the boss, all made for a thrilling read.

What would happen with Lia was a big question on my mind. The answer to that I assume will have to wait until book three, but she was on Evan's mind a lot in this one. The little time they spent together kept replaying in his mind over and over again, followed by guilt of how he left. I'm not going to lie -- these were my favorite parts. What can I say, I'm a romantic.

While Lia was on Evan's mind, there was another woman in his bed. No matter how much I wanted Evan to find Lia, I couldn't mind him seeking out the company of a prostitute. He needed sleep free of nightmares, and she helped. I had even started to like her, and felt bad when Evan would be brutally honest with her about their relationship, and even worse about it how it ended. It definitely took me by surprise.

The most important part was getting to know Evan. All we got from book one were a few facts: ex-marine, hit man, dog owner. Otherwise Occupied provided a lot more information. What happened while he was a marine being the most important, because that time started haunting his dreams, making him unable to sleep, and the lack of sleep combined with everything else happening in his life at the time led to some unfortunate turn of events.
I mentioned expecting good things, but good things were not happening to Evan, which all led to one hell of an ending. Having book three at your disposal is recommended, because the cliffhanger was brutal.

“You are going to crack someday, aren’t you, Lieutenant?”
“Sure am”
