Synopsis On Goodreads:
In the latest Kate Daniels novel from #1 New York Times bestselling author Ilona Andrews, magic is coming and going in waves in post-Shift Atlanta—and each crest leaves danger in its wake…

After breaking from life with the Pack, mercenary Kate Daniels and her mate—former Beast Lord Curran Lennart—are adjusting to a very different pace. While they’re thrilled to escape all the infighting, Curran misses the constant challenges of leading the shapeshifters.

So when the Pack offers him its stake in the Mercenary Guild, Curran seizes the opportunity—too bad the Guild wants nothing to do with him and Kate. Luckily, as a veteran merc, Kate can take over any of the Guild’s unfinished jobs in order to bring in money and build their reputation. But what Kate and Curran don’t realize is that the odd jobs they’ve been working are all connected.

An ancient enemy has arisen, and Kate and Curran are the only ones who can stop it—before it takes their city apart piece by piece…

"One doesn’t let her fiancĂ© fight a horde of ghouls by himself."

The 8th installment in the Kate Daniels series was one of my most expected reads of 2015 and as usual- it did not disappoint. It's not one of my favorite books of the series, but it was still pretty awesome.

Fun, action-packed and suspenseful. I expected this book to focus on Kate vs. Hugh or even Kate vs. Roland plot, but I was wrong. There's completly another, unfamiliar villain in the town making Kate's and the life of  the rest of her gang complicated and everything but ordinary. Beside shifters and vampires, as a special bonus we also get ghouls, djinns, giants and many more mythical creatures. The plot can be summed up with one sentence: Action, action everywhere. It's probably the most action-packed book of the series which was a positive and slightly negative thing for me. Positive, because the duo Andrews excel at writing these scenes for the most part. Negative, because- it's like the characters and both the reader couldn't catch a break. All that non-stop action, no matter how gripping and well-done, tended to become a bit exhausting and overwhelming from time to time for me and the thing I missed is more interaction between characters aside fighting.

My favorite parts of the plot:
~ Roland, Kate, Curran & Julie having a "family dinner." That was hilarious! Wish we had seen more of Roland in this installment, because he's a really intriguing and fun (in a creepy kind) of way character.

~ Kate's & Curran's unsuccessful attempts at being good neighbors, LOL.

~ New neighbors in the hood.

The only flaw: Where is Hugh??? I missed that psycho/ sociopath / killer. :(

All in all, without spoiling anything all I'm going to add is that this series is a special treat for every urban fantasy/ pnr romance fan. A must read. I usually lose interest or get disappointed at some point with series which have more than 5 books, but this is not the case. Highly recommended!
